There’s much more to Israel than Middle East conflict

    Feb 03, 2016 Go comment!
For Diaspora Jewry, identifying with Israel has today largely become a matter of showing solidarity in times of trouble and defending it against its multiple detractors. The flipside of this is that Israel’s many extraordinary achievements and the sheer richness and excitement of living in a thriving, multicultural Jewish state, tends to be overshadowed.

'They have the halachic status of a rodef'

These words, purportedly uttered by Rabbi Yitzchak Chakak last week, have such connotations that JR set out to find out more about the little-known rabbinic concept which is - unfortunately - back in the news. It resurfaced as followers of R. Berland declared a "din rodef" against the Chief Rabbi. It may be only the second time the concept has been invoked in recent times, last making the front pages as partial justification for the assassination of Israeli PM Rabin in '95. But now, R Chakak may have recanted, Shuvu Banim have toned it down & influential conservative Rabbi Shlomo Aviner had much to say.

Did mistake lead to unintended death threat

    Jan 31, 2016 Go comment!
It was all a mistake, says spokesman for the Shuvu Banim Breslov sect at their yeshiva which is a stone’s throw from the Kotel in Jerusalem. “Yossi” - members only go by their first names - told Jewish Report online that “it was never once written on the website anything on the matter in the name of Rabbi Berland,” he said. Yossi reiterated that Rav Berland never even knew of the content of his blog or website and that accusing him of making “a death threat to Goldstein is an outright lie and it is a blood libel.” The content on the blog has been changed, he says.

January 27 marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Today the name is ubiquitous, but, in 1946 few beyond those who had survived to tell the tale, had heard of it. But David Boder, an unassuming Latvian Jew who’d emigrated to the US and as a pioneer of psychology in the 1920s, spent that year, and the rest of his life, documenting the Shoah – even though his own name has got lost in the process!
