Israeli food a hit among world cuisine

    Jan 25, 2016 Go comment!
A major culinary revolution has taken place in the past three decades and a new documentary by a young, inspiring Israeli-born American chef, Michael Solomonov is taking travel foodies by storm (SEE TRAILER). Solomonov (or Solo, as he's known), travels all over Israel, eating and talking about how ethnic traditions from across the Diaspora have been incorporated into one diverse Israeli cuisine. And, of course, future waves of migrants (such as the French, currently) will all add to this culinary melting pot.

He told friends and associates that he would be willing to spend at least $1 billion of his own money on a campaign for the November 2016 election and has aides drawing up plans. However, it seems, that the Jewish media tycoon will only run if the other options are fellow-Jew Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump (who has frum Jewish grandchildren.

“WOOLIES RUBBISHES RUMOURS OF GOING GAZA ON ISRAEL” - first published in July 2014 comes a close second in the Top Reads of all time on SAJR Online - at just over 25 000 reads & almost 200 comments. Woolies came out strongly apolitical & moved to stifle mischievous rumours that it was planning to stop carrying Israeli products. They chose the pages of JR to say 'it’s all nonsense', much to the chagrin of the anti-Israel lobby. The story created a daily unique visitor record of 12 241 that still stands. At peak, the website had 823 simultaneous users online.

PE lawyer hits back, suing Board

    Jan 20, 2016 8 Comments
“JEWS PER SE ARE PEACE-LOVING PEOPLE” said PE lawyer Maureen Jansen, pictured, this week, vowing to sue the SAJBD which had laid a hate speech complaint against her last week with the SAHRC. The matter related to a Facebook rant, of which Board chair Jeff Katz said: “Such hate-mongering goes beyond defaming and threatening any particular group of people; they go against the culture of non-racialism.” “Bloody Israelis should be exterminated along with all the ‘Jews’ everywhere who support Israel” posted Jansen.

Levelling, reducing tension on campus battlefields

The Rhodes fiasco, what it cost them and who left after our exposé. The rise of toxic anti-Zionism, followed by the fall of a once-revered university, has all the makings of a thriller. Over 3 years it involved institutional spying on Jews & illicit use of public funds to bash Israel. After determined attempts by some Jewish leaders to leave it alone & those of a brave few to fight & conquer, Rhodes’ devastating & very expensive defeat, loss of leadership & huge losses of Jewish donor funding, proved a lesson to institutions with more intellect at the helm.

This is a test of placing the Jewish Report Online newsletter on the website. The weekly JR newsletter is sent out to a twenty-thousand-plus database. This edition was sent in the week ending January 9 and only some of the pictures are included in this test post. It was, as always, a busy period for our website as there was a four week hiatus of print publishing. The website published 24/6 to keep readers up to date, posting 76 stories and sending out three newsletters in the three weeks.

Zuma to ANC members: Don’t go to Israel

    Jan 12, 2016 13 Comments
President Zuma read significant parts of a document entitled: “Statement of the National Executive Committee” (NEC) at the ANC's 104th birthday party last Shabbos. The statements on the Middle East made up a mere three paragraphs of the 7,000-word NEC statement, but marks the first time that Zuma has personally uttered a statement discouraging travel – albeit with his ANC hat on - to Israel. This, say pundits, marks a significant change over the same documents and speeches from previous years.

A new Egyptian ambassador has taken up his post in Israel, after three years in which there was no senior diplomat leading the embassy (although it had remained open). This was seen as being in reciprocation for Israel reopening its Cairo embassy in September 2015 since closing it in 2011 after it was trashed by demonstrators.

UPDATED WEDNESDAY: It is not often that a community media platform gets to write 63 stand-alone stories on one individual’s activities over 20 months. Therefore, for consistently making fresh, controversial news, there can only be one choice for Jewish Report Online’s Religious Newsmaker of the Year. Rabbi Eliezer Berland, the man who in 2014 decided he wanted to settle in SA and in 2015, despite Israel (and Interpol) issuing arrest warrants for him and courts in the Netherlands deeming him due for extradition, has returned to SA and, he believes, to stay.

    79 balloons for runaway rav’s 79th birthday

    Jan 04, 2016 4 Comments
Fugitive Rabbi Eliezer Berland celebrated his 79th birthday last week. The rabbi is living in exile in South Africa after he jumped bail and disappeared from the Netherlands earlier this year. His disappearance was discovered after his final appeal against his extradition to Israel was denied and the authorities went to detain him at a hospital where he was reportedly being treated. His Dutch lawyer said in an interview in December that the charges were spurious and that Rabbi Berland intended to settle in SA where he enjoys some sort of "diplomatic immunity".
