    UPDATED WEDNESDAY: It is not often that a community media platform gets to write 63 stand-alone stories on one individual’s activities over 20 months. Therefore, for consistently making fresh, controversial news, there can only be one choice for Jewish Report Online’s Religious Newsmaker of the Year. Rabbi Eliezer Berland, the man who in 2014 decided he wanted to settle in SA and in 2015, despite Israel (and Interpol) issuing arrest warrants for him and courts in the Netherlands deeming him due for extradition, has returned to SA and, he believes, to stay.

It co-opt minority affinity groups, & others, also well-meaning people who are frustrated with the lack of progress in the peace process, angered by some of the actions of the Israeli government, or just want to take action to impact the political deadlock between Israel and the Palestinians. But, writes ALLAN GALE in this op-ed: “The movement’s approach impedes a just outcome and offers a distorted, intolerant and one-sided picture of a complex situation.”

    79 balloons for runaway rav’s 79th birthday

    Fugitive Rabbi Eliezer Berland celebrated his 79th birthday last week. The rabbi is living in exile in South Africa after he jumped bail and disappeared from the Netherlands earlier this year. His disappearance was discovered after his final appeal against his extradition to Israel was denied and the authorities went to detain him at a hospital where he was reportedly being treated. His Dutch lawyer said in an interview in December that the charges were spurious and that Rabbi Berland intended to settle in SA where he enjoys some sort of "diplomatic immunity".

    BREAKING NEWS! At least two dead and seven seriously wounded in a suspected terror shooting in Tel Aviv. The shooter fled on foot after a Friday afternoon attack on a pub near popular Dizengoff Centre Mall. The area was full of people enjoying what is a weekend afternoon in Israel. Witnesses reported 10 shots fired from an automatic weapon. A manhunt was launched to find the gunman (picture of IDF soldiers searching). Unconfirmed reports say the shooter was assisted by an unidentified woman.

He quotes the example of “Breaking the Silence” - an NGO comprising former soldiers, which publishes testimonies from combatants claiming to have witnessed or heard about wrongdoings during their military service – and on the harm they do.

    Christian faithful from around the world usually descend on the biblical city of Bethlehem for Christmas Eve celebrations at the traditional birthplace of Jesus. But, while all the normal festivities were there, the people were not. Hotel occupancies dropped as low as 40%. The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Fouad Twal, pictured arriving at the Church of the Nativity in the West Bank City of Bethlehem, Thursday. But the town’s mayor, Vera Baboun, says “The tragedy is that … Bethlehem is suffocating!”
