    Morrie Ostroff, who passed away in Israel yesterday, was a giant in the world of advocacy. So much so, that fellow expat SA journalist David Kaplan was asked to write obituaries for Jewish Report and Jerusalem Post, and Rolene Marks for the Times of Israel. All have been published today. “Who isn’t familiar with his well-researched epistles appearing in esteemed newspapers and blogs around the globe?” asks David Kaplan.

    A Russian military jet had violated Israeli airspace it was announced on Sunday. The jet breached Israeli airspace by 1,6 km and turned back when Russia was informed of its mistake. Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon during an interview on Israel Public Radio said the breach had occurred recently while Russia had been carrying out airstrikes against rebels in the Syrian civil war. But, added Yaalon, the plane was not shot down, as the one pictured which was shot down by Turkey earlier this month for airspace intrusion.

    Chairmen, pictured left, Ben Swartz and Jeff Katz, issued a joint statement on Thursday saying “anti-Israel activists caught in lie” - and not for the first time - over supposed SAPS arrest warrant for 4 Israeli military commanders. “These claims have been shown to be outright falsehoods,” says the media release issued in their name. Dr Iqbal Survé, who heads up the Independent Media Group, told Jewish Report that he had launched two high-level investigations into the matter. He's returning from overseas at the end of the month.

    Israeli Orthodox Rabbi Eliezer Berland, rosh yeshiva of the Breslov Chassidic movement, who has been on the run from the Dutch and Israeli authorities, turned up in South Africa - again - in September, having previously beaten an SA Police arrest warrant by a whisker. He reportedly wants to put down roots in South Africa. The “rabbi-on-the-run” is sought in Israel for alleged sex charges laid by some of his female followers. When his legal extradition appeal failed in Holland, he was said to have gone to a small Caribbean island, with no extradition agreement with Israel.

    A tit-for-tat spat between pro- and anti-Israel lobby groups over the validity of arrest warrants in SA for four Israeli generals who were instrumental in Israel’s military preventing the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara from breaking the Gaza blockade. Independent claimed that should they enter SA, they would be arrested. On Monday SAPS spokesman Brigadier Mangwani Malaudzi confirmed To JR he was “dumbfounded” when the letter over the six-and-a-half-year-old incident surfaced at an obscure SAPS unit.
