SAFI Israel Advocacy Conference huge success

    Mar 16, 2016 Go comment!
Five years ago when SAFI held their first Israel Advocacy week they had one hundred people attending. Back then, Jews were under fire, says Fed head Ben Swartz. But a very different story played out last week, as Israel Apartheid Week on South African campuses had been a `dismal failure, said Swartz. “On the Wits campus the ‘haters’ are on the back foot. They seemed to have been asking for forgiveness the whole week!”

Annual rivalry moved online big time in 2016

    Mar 09, 2016 3 Comments
The annual tussle between Israel’s antagonists and protagonists during Israel Apartheid Week was very much an online event this week, largely ignored by the mainstream media and, for the first two days at least, resoundingly won by the Jewish students of SAUJS and their ever-supportive friends from DEISI. And a great deal of support from the community at large. Here are the highlights and low-lights of Tuesday and Wednesday as well as LINKS TO ALL STORIES POSTED ON SAJR

Half the States in US and the Federal Government, France, and the United Kingdom have, or are busy taking measures to ban the Boycott, Divestment and Sanction BDS organisation. Other anti-BDS laws are being proposed in almost every European country while Austria, Germany and Spain have taklen action against BDS activity in their countries. Most of the US; trading partners will likely follow suit, too. Has BDS overplayed its hand?

Left, right & the safe spaces between them

    Feb 17, 2016 Go comment!
Despite the confusing title, “Left, right and the safe spaces between them” and the subtitle: “I have never been a great fan of labels. Well, shoes notwithstanding….” Rolene Marks’ latest blog is actually a very good perspective from an (SA-expat) Israeli about how the world views Israel and Jews politically. Don’t miss another great read from Rolene.

Israel trip an eye-opener for SA clergymen

    Feb 10, 2016 14 Comments
Pictured are part of a group of 20 senior clergymen at the Sea of Galilee who have just returned from what was, clearly, a life-altering experience for them. Not to mention an eye-opener. Read about their experience, where they went, what they did, and – most importantly – why each and every one of them would do it all again – despite the cost. The trip was facilitated by Bridges for Peace and assisted by SAFI and the Cape Fed. This is a great read…

The Shoah's first historian is finally heard

    Jan 25, 2016 Go comment!
January 27 marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Today the name is ubiquitous, but, in 1946 few beyond those who had survived to tell the tale, had heard of it. But David Boder, an unassuming Latvian Jew who’d emigrated to the US and as a pioneer of psychology in the 1920s, spent that year, and the rest of his life, documenting the Shoah – even though his own name has got lost in the process!

In a new blog Ant Katz expresses how flabbergasted he is by the outing of Cassim Mahomed Jasat (pictured), a KZN teacher whose blatant anti-Semitism includes posting pictures in public of school kids dancing with a Nazi flag. Ant says he found out about it “thanks to Spotlighting saying things like: ‘LIES LIES LIES. U JEWS ARE FULL OF IT. THEY ONE LOT OF HERPES FILLED MOT**********’ and ‘ONE NIGHT IN A GAS CHAMBER FOR YOU’ - and to Fred Fischer of Keren Hayesod in Germany picking up on it and writing to the SACE and the media.

Farewell to a giant, Maurice Ostroff

    Dec 01, 2015 1 Comment
Morrie Ostroff, who passed away in Israel yesterday, was a giant in the world of advocacy. So much so, that fellow expat SA journalist David Kaplan was asked to write obituaries for Jewish Report and Jerusalem Post, and Rolene Marks for the Times of Israel. All have been published today. “Who isn’t familiar with his well-researched epistles appearing in esteemed newspapers and blogs around the globe?” asks David Kaplan.

This week, South Africa’s top-selling weekly newspaper - with over 3,5 million readers – flip-flopped and agreed to publish the advert this coming Sunday, albeit without the picture of a Hamas member.

“In relation to the 2008-‘09 Gaza conflict, no army in the history of warfare had taken greater steps than the IDF to minimise harm to civilians in a combat zone. My observations during the 2014 conflict confirmed this. No other army that I have served in or alongside or that I have studied and researched, has yet taken such extensive precautions.” (Colonel Richard Kemp CBE).
