During the blowing of the shofar, we declare Hayom harat olam! (This is the birthday of the world!) Wait, we all know that Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish new year, but here we are celebrating the birthday of the world, nothing less! Let’s try to understand this.

Netanyahu’s silence helps to hide Lithuanian Jewish genocide

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to address the dangerous issue of Holocaust distortion during his recent visit to Lithuania. To best understand the severity of this, we need to clarify the terms and potential hazards.

SA Jews have a lot of freedom to celebrate

    Sep 06, 2018 Go comment!
From ancient to modern history, being Jewish has far too frequently become a matter of life and death. Throughout the crusades, pogroms, the Holocaust, and contemporary terrorist attacks, Jews have experienced being shunned, exiled, forced to practise in secret – or, at the very least, encouraged not to stand out.

You don’t have to be a feminist to know just how incredibly effective women can be. Alone, they are capable of much more than merely multitasking – able to lead, innovate, and effect change.

We need to talk about our successes, not lay low

    Sep 06, 2018 Go comment!
I have a burning question. Why do we not stand up and loudly and proudly tell all of South Africa what sort of a role we play in society? We seem to hide. We have many successes, from charity to the business world. They are publicised in this newspaper, and circulated amongst ourselves.

Limmud entitled to shun unacceptable BDS

    Sep 06, 2018 1 Comment
It is unfortunate that both the op-ed by Professors Bilchitz and Davis (“In shunning speakers, community mimics worst behaviour of BDS” – SA Jewish Report 30 August 2018) and the lead editorial in the same edition have mischaracterised the action taken by Limmud Cape Town in disinviting the proponents of Boycott Divestment Sanctions (BDS) from Limmud in Cape Town in 2018.

Championing pro-BDS speakers’ rights reeks of hypocrisy

    Sep 06, 2018 Go comment!
For Judge Dennis Davis and Professor David Bilchitz, the withdrawal of the invitation to allow the three advocates of Boycott Divestment Sanctions (BDS) to address Limmud is a matter of free speech and all other noble precepts of democracy.

No comparison between Limmud censorship and BDS

    Sep 06, 2018 1 Comment
To be fair, it is important for readers who wish to make an informed decision on this subject to google the three speakers that were disinvited to speak at Limmud to find out what they stand for. Jeremy Phillips, Mitchel Joffe Hunter, and Heidi Grunenbaum are activistis in support of Boycott Divestment Sanctions (BDS) and are involved in inciting against our community, and delegitimising the State of Israel in the public arena.

A time of spiritual growth and renewal

    Sep 06, 2018 Go comment!
The Jewish festive season, commencing this Sunday evening with Rosh Hashanah and ending three weeks later with Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah, is almost upon us. From the sober, solemn introspection of the Aseret Yemei Teshuva – the ten days of repentance that culminate with Yom Kippur – through to the special joyousness that characterises Sukkot, it is a time of spiritual growth, celebration and mutual goodwill. This is the time for the proverbial “wiping of the slate” preparatory to embarking on a new stage of life in a spirit of hope and positivity.

WIZO would like to wish a hearty mazaltov to all the achievers at the ABSA Jewish Achiever Awards who have contributed so greatly to the development and building of our country. In particular, the young women who made us proud as we witnessed so many of them breaking through every glass ceiling, something we encourage in all our facilities in Israel.

Isaac Jankelowitz celebrated his 100th birthday on 2 September surrounded by family and friends. Always a wonderful storyteller, he recounted his life for those celebrating with him. He told how he grew up in the shtetl of Lubtch (Lubza), in what is Belarus today, how he arrived as a poverty stricken migrant in Johannesburg in the early 1930s. He then spoke of running what was the largest furniture factory in South Africa at the time.
