Here are some of the top moments from the Jewish year just departed. Then there’s Mel Brooks, the first Jewish “Bachelorette”, Sarah Silverman thanking “my Jews”, Hollywood’s Gaza Twitter war, Miss Margalit and The Baby Biggs brit. While some of this may be more amusing for SAJR’s foreign audience, which numbers around 30 per cent, it is all a lot of fun.

    BDS shuts Rosebank Woolies on Shabbos

    BDS-SA is cooing after it managed to get Woollies in Rosebank to temporarily close on Shabbos in the first in a series of planned “Monthly National Days of Action against Woolworths” for importing a very small amount of fresh produce items from Israel. It was one of 40 protests around SA. A flashmob formed outside & moved through the shop singing an adaptation of Trey Songz’ popular song “Oh Nana.” See the video and read the words they used…

    “Whenever BDS has initiated an action it has engendered a counter-response that has more than cancelled out any gain it hoped to attain,” writes SAZF vice-chair BEN LEVITAS. BDS’ agenda is “arrogant and racist in that Israeli imports serve the very Orthodox sector of the Jewish population and there are no other sources for these products. If business were to succumb to BDS pressure, the floodgates would be opened to have a whole plethora of products being boycotted.”

    Shekeled & bound by 12% appreciation in currency

    Judging by the actions of the Bank of Israel, Israel’s central bank, the economy is in worrying shape. The bank’s Monetary Committee, at its monthly meeting on August 25, cut its main interest rate in half, from 0,5 per cent to 0,25 per cent - the lowest on record.
