In whose Jewish name does Netanyahu speak?

    Mar 04, 2015 11 Comments
On what basis did Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu claim to speak for the entire Jewish people in his controversial speech to the US Congress this week about Iran? Before leaving Jerusalem for Washington he said: “My responsibility is to worry not only about the State of Israel, but also the future of the Jewish people… Seventy, 80 years ago no one could raise their voice when there were plans to destroy us. Today… it is my obligation.”

    Helping to realise dreams

    Mar 04, 2015 1 Comment
Benjamin Netanyahu presents the case for Israel’s concern of a nuclear capable Iran to the American congress. Is it coincidence that it happens in the same week we celebrate Purim, an event commemorating a reprieve from what was a genocidal plot against our people in the year 357 BCE?

ME peace not a straightforward morality play

    Mar 04, 2015 2 Comments
By ironic coincidence, this year’s annual hate fest known as “Israel Apartheid Week” takes place at a time when Jews around the world are celebrating Purim, the festival that both demonstrates the implacable hatred of our enemies and assures us of our ultimate triumph over them.

Last week I attended the Chev’s annual Zayin Adar dinner, always a heart-warming function. As usual the guests were made up of rabbonim, community leaders, donors, staff and most of all - because this event is really to honour and thank them - those who prepare the departed for burial, our Tahara workers.

    Counting and recording ourselves

    Mar 04, 2015 1 Comment
"I am frequently asked the question, how many Jews live in South Africa. I have also been told with a surprising certainty by a non-Jew that there must be at least a million living here," writes SAJR Editor Vanessa Valkin in her leader this week. "They were shocked when I told them our community had a mere 60 000. At the time, in the late ‘90s, that seemed to be an accepted figure. People assumed there were 120 000 in the heyday and that the figure had halved." REad on...

The question (in last week’s paper) regarding the extraordinary number of Bnei Yisrael that left Egypt after only 210 years of living there and after having arrived in Egypt as only 70 souls, is statistically a very sound question.

History will tell if Israeli PM’s speech to US Congress last night was well-founded or risked damaging Israel-US relations. Jewish Report Online publishes the full transcript of the speech on the Iranian nuclear threat as well as the complete video. “Iran is the foremost sponsor of terrorism in the world” he said. Imagine what they could do with nuclear weapons? Canadian Prof Irwin Cotler will analyse Netanyahu's speech at the opening of the SAZF elective conference, which is open to the community, this weekend. Don't miss it!
