Jewish primary school evacuated by bomb squad

  • School bomb HOME
A Jewish primary school and house were evacuated after a suspicious package was found there last Friday (pictured at left). Pupils and staff and neighbours were sent home early and the police detonated a “suspicious package” - a suitcase - in a controlled explosion after cordoning off the street at the back of Gateshead Jewish Primary School in England.

In the end it had all been a mistake and, apart from a lot of mess from the controlled explosion, and a lost day of school, no damage was done at the primary school, located in northern England. Gateshead Yeshiva in the same city is Europe’s largest - giving the city has a large community of Orthodox Jewry.

A police spokesman said that Northumbria Police had dealt with an incident in Gateshead where a suspicious package has been found at the rear of a primary school.

Officers had carried out inquiries at the scene to establish what the package was, and later carried out a controlled explosion after which those who had been evacuated from their homes were allowed back in.

Bear Paris in mind

Leonard Muscat, president of Representative Council of North East Jewry, said: “Our community could be at risk, bearing in mind what has happened in Paris.

Obviously there is a possibility that this was targeted at Jews.

We don’t know what is in the mind of people who do this sort of thing.

“We are warning our community to be extra vigilant and that has been the feeling for months or if not years.”

Following the explosion and further inquiries police said the suspicious item was not believed to have been of any risk.
