    Board sued in Equality Court over ‘Kol Isha’

    The Cape Council of the SA Jewish Board of Deputies Papers were served papers today that they are being sued in the Equality Court for “discrimination of women on the basis of gender”. The Board issued a statement today. The claimants are two Cape Orthodox Jews and SACRED, and the charges emanate from the issue of women not being allowed to sing at secular events.     Icon Brian Joffe gets Wits honorary doctorate

    Brian Joffe, who graduated from Wits University as a chartered accountant in 1971, received his honorary doctorate degree from Wits University Chancellor, Justice Dikgang Moseneke, at the graduation ceremony for the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management today (Wednesday, March 29). Bidvest Group has become one of the leading corporations in SA - with a global footprint – and a turnover of over R200 billion. Today, Bidvest employs more than 145 000 - over 125 000 of them in SA.

    The heart-breaking story of 67-year-old Sheila and her 73-year-old husband (names withheld) were involved in a collision back in 1994. Both were seriously injured, although she more so than him, particularly in light of the fact that she underwent a serious shoulder surgery a few days prior which was completely undone in the accident. Pictured left are Ronald and Darren Bobroff outside the High Court.

    Jonathan Kaplan, former 2010 Achiever Award Winner for Arts, Science Culture and Sports, and world record holder for refereeing the most number of rugby test matches, is expecting a baby boy at the end of May, just a few months before he turns 50. Ordinary enough except that Kaplan, who is not married but in a relationship, is doing this on his own, using both an egg donor and a surrogate.

    This past Sunday, Sinai-X drew a capacity crowd to the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg for an interactive and fully immersive learning experience. The event also served as a big bang launch for the latest Jewish unity/identity project from the Office of the Chief Rabbi - Avot 101. Sinai-X moved to Durban this Thursday, before finishing up in Cape Town on Sunday.

    President Jacob Zuma faces the unanimous judgment of the Constitutional Court where a full bench of 11 judges found he had failed to uphold his constitutional mandate and ordered him to pay back a portion of taxpayers’ money on non-security-related items which he used to upgrade his Nkandla homestead. This include a cattle kraal, chicken run, amphitheatre, visitors’ centre and swimming pool.
