Shalom readers,

Friends rally to help stave off attack on Israel-SA relations

In what one senior opposition MP calls a “pre-planned stealth operation” by the ANC (as a political party) and their anti-Israel lobbyist pals - aimed at forcing the ANC Executive’s (the Cabinet) hand to break ties with the Holy Land, a specially-convened and covert meeting was to have taken place at the Parliamentary precinct on mini-budget day, the day after Succot ended. Luckily, one of the many friends of Israel got wind of it and the matter was hastily (albeit probably temporarily) dealt with and the meeting never took place.

BAYING FOR BLOOD: SA's Ambassador to Israel, Sisa Ngombane, made a contextual - and rather innocuous - remark about three young Israeli boys killed by Hamas in 2014 and so incensed anti-Israel groups in South Africa, that they are baying for his blood. His head may yet roll - however unfairly, as he seems to have walked into what increasingly looks to have been a carefully laid trap - which was also part of the "stealth" attack by Luthuli House.

A recent big-ticket issue - a spate of informative new information on the BOBROFF SAGA, ‘Brought shame on their profession & family’ – had more reads on the website than all other stories combined. More in the paper next week.

Unesco vote sees PA bid for attention backfire - A draft resolution at Unesco on “Occupied Palestine” may have met Palestinians' aims to get world attention, but it was a Pyrrhic victory at best and a setback at worst. See links within this story to our previous coverage on JR Online last week – and meet the two heroes who emerged

BDS threat to academic freedom, German students- The student government of a major German university formally denounced‘anti-Semitic BDS’ as a threat to academic freedom and accused the German branch of the US-based NGO of State Capture. Our story shows how another German university, however, simply doesn’t get it! This story also has links to other recent stories relating to the pushback against anti-Israel bodies such as BDS on US campuses – and why the US is so adamant that anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism.

THE FULL STORY OF ATTEMPTED STATE CAPTURE TRAVESTY

BDS's carefully planned plot to break ties between SA & Israel so nearly worked

Read how the anti-Israel lobby made three attempts at scuppering Israel-SA relations – only on JR Online. First, by leading the SA Ambassador into a trap at ORT Airport, then, by trying to take over the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, and, finally, in a failed Coup de grâce in Parliament on Budget Day – just after Sukkot. In his popular Taking Issue column, Geoff Sifrin asks if it is Time to march to Pretoria or pack for Perth? The past week’s announcement by 81 CEOs of South Africa’s largest companies, including prominent members of the Jewish community - Brian Joffe, Mark Levy, Adrian Gore, Stephen Koseff and others - to publicly back Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan against the NPA’s fraud charges, throws into relief Jews’ and other South Africans’ dilemma: To attempt to rescue the country from its plunge downwards by “marching to Pretoria”, or to give up and “pack for Perth”.

BDS threat to academic freedom, German students- The student government of a major German university formally denounces ‘anti-Semitic BDS’ as a threat to academic freedom and accuse the German branch of the US-based NGO of State Capture.

Leaked mails: Hillary eager to patch up with Bibi- Hillary Clinton’s plan to meet the Israeli prime minister in her first month as president is listed high in an internal campaign memo outlining the priorities of her first 100 days - a sign of how important it is to repair US-Israel tensions.

Unesco vote sees PA bid for attention backfire- If the latest draft resolution at Unesco on “Occupied Palestine” succeeded in the Palestinians' aims to reclaim the world's attention, then it was a Pyrrhic victory at best and a setback at worst. Part of an effort on Jerusalem initiated at Unesco in 2015 by the Palestinian Authority, the October 12 vote saw a comfortable majority of states, including Russia and China, pass language calling on Israel "to cease the persistent excavations and works in East Jerusalem, particularly in and around the Old City”, as one clause reads.

Ewan McGregor's biggest challenge: Philip Roth - Which is braver: Riding a motorcycle across the length of Africa, or taking on an adaptation of a Philip Roth novel for your first directing gig? Ewan McGregor, pictured, starring as Swede Levov in "American Pastoral" answers the question...
