JTA’s 10 most-read stories of 2016

The Jewish Telegraphic Agency, or JTA, is one of the wire services (like Reuters) which SA Jewish Report subscribes to. It is the largest Jewish news service globally. They are US-based and tend to cover Israeli and American Jewish news, views and politics, with a smattering of World Jewish News.

“Jewish 2016 was a particularly captivating chapter in the Jewish story,” wrote Gabe Friedman in his introduction to Top-Ten JTA stories of the year. The year was marked by the unexpected rise of Donald Trump, he says, which “frightened some Jews and emboldened others.”

Gabe also refers to the numerous leading historical Jewish figures who died in the year, “and the US-Israel relationship repeatedly made headlines.”

JTA Top ReadsAnd, as always, 2016 was chock-a-block full of random, bizarre and inspiring Jewish moments.

The list below are the ten most-read stories on JTA’s website in 2016, followed by a picture illustrating four of them – and, finally, a nog-a-pip of the three that just didn’t make the list – numbers eleven to thirteen.

The Top-Ten are in no particular order and range from an account of a Jewish transgender man becoming a father, to Kirk Douglas’ 100th birthday party to a side-by-side comparison of the presidential candidates’ Jewish sons-in-law.
