SAJBD responds to latest report on Cape Council elections

  • 2b-Letter7
For the record, the SA Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) would once again like to take issue with the SA Jewish Report’s latest article on the Seligson Report – titled “The quandary of the Board of Deputies’ treasurer”, April 27 edition – regarding the SAJBD Cape Council’s election process.
by Shaun Zagnoev, National Chairman, SAJBD | May 10, 2018

Following the previous article that was in your paper, we wrote to the SA Jewish Report, questioning the selective quoting of the Seligson Report as to former Cape chairman Eric Marx’s “misconduct”.

Again, we would like to highlight the fact that the journalist has again selectively quoted from the Seligson Report in terms of Mr Marx’s election error, but omitted the recommendation: “We understand that the misconduct has been dealt with and there is no need for us to suggest further action be taken.”

These repeated omissions skew the findings of the report and bring into question the motives for the continued unrelenting focus on Mr Marx.

The National Executive Council of the SAJBD will meet on May 14 to elect a new treasurer and will inform the community once this democratic process has taken place.

This was a timeous story specifically about a decision that was taken six months before about Mr Marx being suspended for that time. The decision that was taken was also specifically around the misconduct that was quoted in the Seligson Report. Just before going to print the SA Jewish Report found out that there was to be a meeting and a treasurer was to be chosen, so the particular part of the quote you are referring to became obsolete. The SA Jewish Report stands by its journalist and the story. - Editor
