The winds of war are blowing

MIDDLE EAST - “No comment” - the two words journalists most abhor, but which with time have come to be interpreted as an admission of guilt; a tacit confirmation of the party being questioned. Ask an Israeli official if the country has nuclear arms and inevitably you’ll get the “no comment” answer. Ask if the country conducts military strikes in Syria, same response.

It hasn’t even been two months since our family touched down in Tel Aviv and with increasing regularity I find myself saying: “It’s such a small world.” I keep on messaging my twin sister in Cape Town saying: “You’ll never guess who we bumped into today!”

The Sinai Indaba conference last weekend has been lauded as a great success, as in previous years. With Purim this week, we marvel anew at the story of Queen Esther and Mordechai and the miraculous manner in which Hashem’s behind-the-scenes intervention brings salvation to the Jewish people. He was there all along, but hidden, quiet, unseen, as He so often is.

Middle East: Most Israelis feel they get so much bad press anyway that another “Israel Apartheid Week” (IAW) aimed at garnering support for the Boycott, Disinvestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement won’t make much difference.

Muslims who repair vandalised Jewish graves

    Mar 03, 2017 4 Comments
If a Muslim campaign in the United States to raise money for repairing more than 100 Jewish graves vandalised by anti-Semites in St Louis can raise over $100 000 in just a couple of days, does this indicate that the new emergence of racial hatred in the world can be overcome by ordinary people doing something proactive?

Is a bronze statue the ultimate conceit or just for the birds?

Among the astounding revelations in the recent State of the Nation address was the plan of North West provincial premier, Supra Mahumapelo to build a six-metre bronze statue of President Jacob Zuma in Groot Marico, which the Democratic Alliance says will cost R6 million. Zuma was arrested in the area in 1963 by apartheid forces.

At the time of writing, the country is looking ahead to the annual State of the Nation address, to be delivered in Parliament on Thursday. It is likely that President Jacob Zuma will focus on such issues as improving service delivery, confronting unemployment, the question of funding higher education (as we know, a particularly challenging question in today's environment) and similar such issues.
