Why is Israel so happy if things are so bad?

    Jul 29, 2015 3 Comments
With the constant stream of ugly headlines about Israel, threats from the ICC about possible war crimes investigations, and BDS’ worldwide success in fostering boycotts against it, one could easily conclude that Israelis must be unhappy and pessimistic.

BDS tries to reach SAJR users with video

    Jul 29, 2015 8 Comments
Within an hour of JR Online posting “What Madiba said & meant” last week, quoting the actual speech of Madiba that anti-Israel proponents worldwide so liberally like to misquote, “BDS Works” and “Adam Levy” had availed themselves of SAJR’s liberal comments policy to post links, including one which is an edited version of a video which portrays Mandela as having anti-Israel leanings. Nothing could be further from the truth, as the unedited version shows. See what Madiba says in the actual unedited version of the 1990 Town Hall interview with Ted Koppel.

Cultural vandalism: scourge of our age

    Jul 22, 2015 2 Comments
Amid the cultural vandalism that confronts the world today, when precious artefacts and buildings have been gleefully destroyed by the likes of the radical Jihadists of Islamic State, the Taliban and their ilk, because they contradict the spirit of their fundamentalist beliefs, it is encouraging to note the instances where the opposite is happening.

Attendances at this year’s Sinai Indaba, if anything, exceeded the already impressive showings of previous years, while the forthcoming instalment of Limmud likewise looks like it is drawing capacity crowds.

The most misquoted of Madiba’s words

    Jul 22, 2015 1 Comment
Jewish Report’s online editor Ant Katz challenges UKZN academic & PSF activist over an Op-Ed she posted in last Sunday’s Tribune. Katz unpacks the entire Mandela speech (which Madiba wrote personally), shows how well-disposed he was towards Israel, pulls apart some of Ms Nadvi’s statements – and concludes with the words: “I challenge you, Lubna Nadvi, academic and community activist, to go to Israel and Palestine with SAIF as the enlightened sixteen did, and let’s see what you think on your return.”

Israel’s nukes the guarantor of ‘never again’

    Jul 15, 2015 Go comment!
Amidst all the diplomatic noise currently going on about Iran’s nuclear programme, and attempts by world powers to stop it achieving nuclear weapons, it seems strange to remember that South Africa was once a nuclear-armed nation - a pariah state armed to the teeth, with military sanctions imposed on it from the international community.

The success BDS has had in South Africa and elsewhere in making the phrase “apartheid Israel” familiar and acceptable, underlines the importance of what things are called - particularly in the social media age, where a name or acronym can go viral in seconds and affect the perceptions of millions.

Alvin Kushner, national chair of the SA Union for Progressive Judaism takes exception to a statement in the SAJR that the “once-vibrant Reform/Progressive stream has shrunk dramatically and has little influence today.” Not so, he says: “The Progressive movement in SA is still vibrant with 10 very active Synagogues,” is showing positive growth in some areas, in Cape Town one in five Jewish families are Progressive and the Progressive community has far more than proportionate representation on the Board & Fed committees, he says.

I had a new experience last week which is not, in itself, unusual. The scope of the Chev’s work is such that I often encounter novel situations and unprecedented challenges. Although I am frequently involved in case conferencing when challenging situations arise, it was the first time that I attended an “intake session”.

Pragmatism may bring peace to Mideast

    Jun 10, 2015 6 Comments
One reason we achieved a settlement in South Africa was that religion was not an obstacle. Face-to-face dialogue between wise leaders acting rationally on behalf of their people, produced a pragmatic compromise each side could live with. Mandela and FW de Klerk did it for us. Why can’t Benjamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas do it in the Middle East?

Prof Friedman denounces 'I Love Hitler'

    May 25, 2015 9 Comments
“If I had lived in Hitler's Germany, I would have been sent to a death camp simply because I am Jewish,” posted Friedman on Facebook. A strong supporter of the Palestinian cause, Friedman refused to remain silent on this issue: “We are also entering very dangerous territory,” he wrote, saying that he is “thinking here of the claim that Wits's Vice-Chancellor bowed to "Jewish money power". Language like that cost millions of lives in Europe - anyone who uses it is a racist, not a friend of racial transformation,” posted Prof Friedman.

    Three Days and Dreading…

    May 20, 2015 1 Comment
It’s not to say I am ungrateful. Really I am not. But the thought of spending a three-day-yom tov (that’s 72 hours) with little reprieve does fill me with a feeling of dreaded anticipation. And although this year all observant Jews in the Diaspora will suffer the same fate (the less honest will tell you how much they enjoy it), one has to spare an additional moment’s thought for South Africans celebrating a 3-day Shavuot.
