    Having him in custody and keeping him there are two different things as Rabbi Eliezer Berland, the man who has evaded Authorities worldwide seven times over the past 18 months, has a second stab at getting awarded bail by a Randburg magistrate. Last Thursday Berland was allowed the dignity of not having to join the general prison population and the freedom to practice his spiritual beliefs from a private cell at the Randburg police station, where he has also been given permission to confer with his own doctors.

He has ditched three attempts by The Hawks to arrest him in the past two years, having been present initially at all three places. He dramatically escaped from SA to Holland after the second attempt to apprehend him and later disappeared from the Netherlands when a court ordered his extradition to Israel to answer to several “sex-pest” allegations. Now (back in SA) he says he’ll surrender on Monday.

    Breslov Rev Berland now SA citizen - says son

    In what he touted as a “victory over the Israeli legal authorities”, Rabbi Berland’s son, Nachum, announced on Monday that the Shuvu Banim Breslov sect’s spiritual leader, Rabbi Eliezer Berland (pictured), had been issued South African citizenship and “no longer needs to run”. Nachum had been in SA on Sunday to share his father’s 79th birthday – and brought some of Rabbi Berland’s grandchildren with him.
