Jewish people in South Africa have nothing to hide, and we certainly don’t have to be shamed into going out the back door.

It was not yet 7am in Israel on Tuesday morning when mortar and rocket fire rained down on the southern part of the country. As many as 120 were said to have been fired from Gaza.

Jumping into the mouth of the social media monster

    May 24, 2018 Go comment!
We so often get asked why we are not more involved in social media and told that we need to up our game. The people asking are 100% correct – this is truly an area in which the SA Jewish Report needs to improve on. And our new CEO, Dani Kedar, is working hard on this.

Don’t force us to turn on Israel!

    May 17, 2018 2 Comments
I keep wishing this week had been a bad dream rather than reality for the South African Jewish community, and that we would wake up and everything that has been said and done in the wake of the Gaza border killings was erased.

    Waking up on Mother’s Day

    May 10, 2018 Go comment!
I thoroughly enjoy spoiling my mother on Mother’s Day. There is something about having a special day that belongs to her (and me now, as a mom) that makes it an occasion. And I have to admit to loving the extra special attention my boys give me on this day.

From May Day to Lag B’Omer via the Israeli-Palestinian situation

    May 03, 2018 Go comment!
The only time I celebrated May Day, or Workers’ Day, was in Israel. This was way back in 1988 and I was with a Habonim kvutzat aliya on Kibbutz Sdot Yam. Our group had been in Israel for only a few months.

Good or bad? That is the question

“What a revolting person she is! And here I was so impressed by her beauty and acting ability, I thought she was a good person. She sure has shown her true colours!” This was a titbit from a conversation I overheard while walking past a restaurant in Norwood this week. This woman was going on about Israeli-born Hollywood actress Natalie Portman. And her friend was agreeing.

Dreaming of taking the bitter out of this bitter-sweet week

This is a bitter-sweet week, in which we celebrate Israel’s milestone 70th birthday but also remember the 23 646 soldiers and 3 134 terror victims who lost their lives in ensuring Israel’s security.

The lessons we learn from the Shoah

    Apr 12, 2018 Go comment!
This Yom Hashoah, there are fewer survivors left. I am stating the obvious as the Holocaust began 85 years ago and ended 73 years ago. So, the youngest survivors are likely to be in the winter of their lives. Having had the toughest start in this world, living past 80 is a very long life.

    Breaking out of bondage

For most of us, Pesach is a time for family, time to slow down, clean up and be attuned to our Judaism and to what makes us different. It is also a time to consider where we are at in terms of our freedom and to be grateful for what we have.

What does Human Rights Day mean to us?

    Mar 22, 2018 Go comment!
This week, we celebrated Human Rights Day. We generally do very little on a public holiday that even vaguely reminds us of what we are supposedly commemorating. For most of us, a public holiday is a fabulous extra day off. And it is always a treat!

Fighting the battle within while the external one rages

    Mar 15, 2018 Go comment!
It is Israel Apartheid Week and there are unpleasant things happening on university campuses in South Africa. From the reports I have been getting, our students have behaved with dignity and respect. As for the anti-Israel lobby, I am not sure how vandalising their universities can be seen as respectful.

When things fall apart, will the centre still hold?

    Mar 08, 2018 Go comment!
When you picked up our newspaper last week and looked for our Purim spiel, you probably stopped at the story about Stan & Pete having lost its kashrut licence with disbelief. Who wouldn’t? They are the oldest and biggest, and one of the most trusted, kosher caterers in Johannesburg. Everyone knew them and for more than 40 years, they were at the core of Jewish celebrations.

As we put our newspaper to bed on Wednesday evening, Jewish people around the world are revelling in and enjoying Purim. They are letting their proverbial hair down and celebrating how we survived the threat of Haman through the wisdom of Mordechai and Queen Esther.

    It’s all about exemplary leadership

    Feb 22, 2018 Go comment!
In a week, it feels as if the whole country has changed and, for the most part, we are all still pretty euphoric. I personally get a kick out of hearing people refer to “President Ramaphosa”. It is exciting having a leader who understands leadership, appears to truly care about this country and its people, and can see a clear way forward.

What a fascinating time it has been in the politics of South Africa! While President Jacob Zuma dug in his heels and refused to go, ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa and the rest of the party’s leadership were running to and fro in various efforts to convince him to bow out amicably.
