    In dark places rot festers

    Sep 28, 2017 3 Comments
We have a kind, generous and caring community. You just have to read the story about the 11-year-old Hannah Katz on page four to be inspired. We have a community that goes out of its way not only to help our own, but the broader South African community as well. We are just like that.

We can’t keep quiet in the face of wrongdoing

    Sep 14, 2017 3 Comments
We have been threatened and cajoled and told that we are bad Jews today as we put this bumper Rosh Hashanah edition to bed. What kind of person runs a story during the month of Elul about a man who made a mistake? Have you no heart? What about his children? The newspaper is destroying his life, we were told by the numerous callers and e-mailers who lambasted us this week.

Do we have a rising neo-Nazi problem?

    Sep 07, 2017 1 Comment
I am not coming to you this week with any solutions or smart comments, but rather questions. These are questions that I have been mulling over for a while, but they have come to a head this week.

Do we ignore the devil and hope he will go away?

    Aug 31, 2017 Go comment!
When I first read Andile Mngxitama’s anti-Semitic tweet, it got stuck in my throat. I couldn’t actually read it aloud without feeling like I was going to be sick. What kind of person would consider that using the bodies of human beings to create lampshades and soap was anything but abhorrent?

I admire people who volunteer their services with communal organisations. I am always struck by their selfless desire to give back and help others.

The true achievers of our community

Looking around me at the Absa Jewish Achiever Awards on Sunday, I could not help thinking that we are a force to be reckoned with - in no uncertain terms.

    The true meaning of community

    Aug 10, 2017 Go comment!
What is it that makes us a community? We have so many different strands, political and religious opinions, perspectives and histories. We are a diverse bunch of people who share particular aspects of our identity and belief systems. So much the same and yet so much is different!

Does a blotch on a great picture ruin it?

    Aug 03, 2017 Go comment!
On a community newspaper, it is inevitable that sometimes we are going to have to do something we really don’t want to do. This happened to me this week.

We will never ‘get over it’!

    Jul 27, 2017 1 Comment
When our intrepid journalist, Nicola Miltz, investigated the Northcliff swastika flag flying, she eventually spoke to a man who told her to “get over it”. He was referring to our reaction to a Nazi flag flying in suburban Johannesburg.

    Giving everyone a fair hearing

    Jul 20, 2017 Go comment!
When a Jewish person does well, we klibe such naches and love to bask in their glory. Remember when Joel Stransky kicked that winning drop goal in the World Cup 1995? He became our hero and we were very proud that he was Jewish.

Sorry seems to be the hardest word

    Jul 13, 2017 Go comment!
How hard is it to apologise? I keep asking myself why Cosatu’s Bongani Masuku won’t just say he is sorry for the anti-Semitic vitriol he spewed out over Jewish students on Wits campus more than eight years ago? What he said was so ugly, I don’t believe anyone could really be surprised that he has been ordered to apologise by a court of law.

When a Jewish person tells a Jewish joke to another Jewish person, it is invariably thought to be hilarious and can be enjoyed for the inside joke that only Jewish people can tell each other.

This week the media in Israel has been filled with every angle on how Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reneged on, or suspended his agreement to create a special egalitarian prayer area at the Kotel, where Jews can pray in the way that befits their tradition.

We live in a country where - right now - the leadership doesn’t appear to be accountable for their wrongdoing and for the damage they do to South Africa.

Saluting the brave youth of ‘76

    Jun 15, 2017 Go comment!
It was 41 years ago that South African schoolchildren stood up against the apartheid government and said “no” to being forced to learn in a language of their oppressor, a language they felt was alien to them. Their protest was a loud, clear and unequivocal “no” to an inferior “Bantu” education.

    Living on the southern tip

    Jun 08, 2017 Go comment!
I am so grateful we live on the southern tip of Africa. In the last few months, there have been a number of horrific terror attacks around the world. In the last week alone, there have been attacks in London and Melbourne. In Europe and the US, there is clearly a rise in terror and, with that, anti-Semitism.

The closeness of our community in times of trouble

    Jun 02, 2017 Go comment!
Shavuot has been described as a “marriage between G-d and the Jewish people” and it is uncanny how it is specifically around this time that the Jewish community is being reminded of how important we are to one another as a community, and of our “otherness”.

    No excuse for Nazi anti-Semitism

    May 25, 2017 1 Comment
Hearing the words “Heil Hitler” are enough to make any Jew go cold. But when Jewish children participate in a schools’ theatrical festival, it is totally unacceptable for them to be subjected to this kind of blatant anti-Semitism.

Do your research before taking a stand

The list of ANC bigwigs supporting this Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) fast in sympathy with the Palestinian prisoners’ hunger strike is very long and I find it quite distressing.
