    Finding unity in our diversity

This week the media in Israel has been filled with every angle on how Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reneged on, or suspended his agreement to create a special egalitarian prayer area at the Kotel, where Jews can pray in the way that befits their tradition.

Setting the example as accountable leaders

We live in a country where - right now - the leadership doesn’t appear to be accountable for their wrongdoing and for the damage they do to South Africa.

Saluting the brave youth of ‘76

    Jun 15, 2017 Go comment!
It was 41 years ago that South African schoolchildren stood up against the apartheid government and said “no” to being forced to learn in a language of their oppressor, a language they felt was alien to them. Their protest was a loud, clear and unequivocal “no” to an inferior “Bantu” education.

    Living on the southern tip

    Jun 08, 2017 Go comment!
I am so grateful we live on the southern tip of Africa. In the last few months, there have been a number of horrific terror attacks around the world. In the last week alone, there have been attacks in London and Melbourne. In Europe and the US, there is clearly a rise in terror and, with that, anti-Semitism.

The closeness of our community in times of trouble

    Jun 02, 2017 Go comment!
Shavuot has been described as a “marriage between G-d and the Jewish people” and it is uncanny how it is specifically around this time that the Jewish community is being reminded of how important we are to one another as a community, and of our “otherness”.

    No excuse for Nazi anti-Semitism

    May 25, 2017 1 Comment
Hearing the words “Heil Hitler” are enough to make any Jew go cold. But when Jewish children participate in a schools’ theatrical festival, it is totally unacceptable for them to be subjected to this kind of blatant anti-Semitism.

Do your research before taking a stand

The list of ANC bigwigs supporting this Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) fast in sympathy with the Palestinian prisoners’ hunger strike is very long and I find it quite distressing.

    Towards respecting differences

I would never have imagined I would be celebrating a powerful woman losing an election, but far-right populist National Front candidate in the French election, Marine Le Pen stands for everything that concerns me about where the world is heading.

    A heartfelt reminder

At one minute to 10am on Monday morning, I was transported back to Israel and from then on the day was one that reminded me of a deep-seated love – that I share with you -- of a crazy country in the Middle East.

We celebrate Freedom Day this week and I feel I have to pause and consider just how free we are and how far we have come as a country and as a community.

    Normalising a horrific situation

    Apr 06, 2017 Go comment!
Last Friday morning (in the aftermath of Jacob Zuma’s sacking frenzy), I had a sense of what it might have felt like in Germany in the late 1930s when the Nazi government kept changing the laws to make Jewish people’s lives worse.

    Haley’s comet of the UN

    Mar 30, 2017 1 Comment
When the then United Nations Ambassador nominee, Nikki Haley, first defended Israel in her opening statement, I sat up and listened. She was so impressive in her clear thinking, determination to ensure that no more would the United Nations bully this tiny country in the Middle East.

Holocaust and colonialism - no comparison

    Mar 23, 2017 Go comment!
The DA’s Helen Zille made comments on Twitter last week that sunk her deep into hot water. She defended colonialism. To be exact, she tweeted: “For those claiming legacy of colonialism was only negative, think of our independent judiciary, transport infrastructure, piped water, etc.”

    Apartheid didn’t bring peace

    Mar 09, 2017 4 Comments
Apartheid was instituted in South Africa in 1948 in order to make sure that one racial group could feel and act superior to another. The idea was to ensure that one group was kept down so the other could soar, so that the one group would always “have” while the other - no matter what they did to change this - were held back from “having”.

    A dysfunctional, caring family

    Mar 03, 2017 1 Comment
We live in a society where dog eats dog and everyone is out there for themselves. That is, other than the Jewish community. Let me rephrase that: Jewish individuals are out there for themselves and their families, but more and more I realise that, despite that, there is an intrinsic kindness and care for community that I don’t believe exists in any other community.

What Donald Trump does, matters to us

    Feb 16, 2017 1 Comment
“Why should I care if Donald Trump rules in America? It doesn't affect me.” This sentiment, which was proffered as feedback for our edition last week, seems to be widespread among the community. Some food for thought from editor Peta Krost Maunder
