Do your research before taking a stand

The list of ANC bigwigs supporting this Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) fast in sympathy with the Palestinian prisoners’ hunger strike is very long and I find it quite distressing.

    Towards respecting differences

    May 11, 2017 Go comment!
I would never have imagined I would be celebrating a powerful woman losing an election, but far-right populist National Front candidate in the French election, Marine Le Pen stands for everything that concerns me about where the world is heading.

    A heartfelt reminder

At one minute to 10am on Monday morning, I was transported back to Israel and from then on the day was one that reminded me of a deep-seated love – that I share with you -- of a crazy country in the Middle East.

We celebrate Freedom Day this week and I feel I have to pause and consider just how free we are and how far we have come as a country and as a community.

    Normalising a horrific situation

    Apr 06, 2017 Go comment!
Last Friday morning (in the aftermath of Jacob Zuma’s sacking frenzy), I had a sense of what it might have felt like in Germany in the late 1930s when the Nazi government kept changing the laws to make Jewish people’s lives worse.

    Haley’s comet of the UN

    Mar 30, 2017 1 Comment
When the then United Nations Ambassador nominee, Nikki Haley, first defended Israel in her opening statement, I sat up and listened. She was so impressive in her clear thinking, determination to ensure that no more would the United Nations bully this tiny country in the Middle East.

Holocaust and colonialism - no comparison

    Mar 23, 2017 Go comment!
The DA’s Helen Zille made comments on Twitter last week that sunk her deep into hot water. She defended colonialism. To be exact, she tweeted: “For those claiming legacy of colonialism was only negative, think of our independent judiciary, transport infrastructure, piped water, etc.”

Temperatures rose across our readership this last week - some with laughter and others with ire - at our Purim shpiel, “Government to expropriate Yeshiva College, Sandringham Gardens”.

    Apartheid didn’t bring peace

    Mar 09, 2017 4 Comments
Apartheid was instituted in South Africa in 1948 in order to make sure that one racial group could feel and act superior to another. The idea was to ensure that one group was kept down so the other could soar, so that the one group would always “have” while the other - no matter what they did to change this - were held back from “having”.

    A dysfunctional, caring family

    Mar 03, 2017 1 Comment
We live in a society where dog eats dog and everyone is out there for themselves. That is, other than the Jewish community. Let me rephrase that: Jewish individuals are out there for themselves and their families, but more and more I realise that, despite that, there is an intrinsic kindness and care for community that I don’t believe exists in any other community.

What Donald Trump does, matters to us

    Feb 16, 2017 1 Comment
“Why should I care if Donald Trump rules in America? It doesn't affect me.” This sentiment, which was proffered as feedback for our edition last week, seems to be widespread among the community. Some food for thought from editor Peta Krost Maunder

    I have come full circle

As the new editor of the SA Jewish Report, I feel like I have come full circle. For many years, I have worked in the mainstream media, starting out in newspapers, then onto television and finally working on magazines (among other media), but my career all started on Jewish newspapers.

The end of a memorable chapter

It is with a mixture of sadness and relief that I am stepping down as editor of the SA Jewish Report at the end of this year. This, our bumper Chanukah edition, is our last print issue of 2016, though we will still be posting news on our website and Facebook page.

    Education in focus

    Nov 16, 2016 Go comment!
After the recent chaos and disruption on university campuses across the country, we focus in on tertiary education. It is not surprising that South African Jews are concerned for their children’s futures and considering alternatives to the local universities. Immigration or at least sending children abroad if opportunity and resources allow, have long formed part of our narrative.

    Some weeks stay in memory

    Nov 10, 2016 1 Comment
As we went to print on Wednesday, news had broken of Donald Trump’s election as the 45th president of the United States. After the shock, came the jokes, including a very memorable one from the Jewish Report’s chairman, Howard Sackstein, who posted on Facebook: “Syria - how many American refugees are you prepared to take in?”

Speaking out against racism and prejudice wherever and whenever it occurs is part of the SAJBD’s mandate. Rather than being separate from our core mission which is to protect and uphold Jewish civil rights, it is in fact, part of the same broad goal.
