    Disunity over BDS plagues SA Progressive Jewry

    SAUPJ Gauteng regional Chairman Reeva Forman says she is “deeply concerned about this divisive issue that threatens not only Gauteng Progressive Jewry, but the wider Jewish community of SA”. Progressive Rabbis Shaked of Johannesburg, and Alexander of Cape Town have supported the anti-Zionist group Jewish Voices for Just Peace (JVJP) - who “actively promote BDS” - according to Dan Brotman (pic) – and are “dishonouring the Progressive movement’s respect for diversity (by) using their pulpit to openly affiliate with one political viewpoint on such a divisive issue”.     In honour of the 20th yahrtzeit of Shlomo Carlebach, the Sandringham Gardens Shul will hold a special Carlebach Friday night service on 31 October. “Come and daven and help ‘liven’ up Kabelat Shabbat for the ‘young people’ of Sandringham Gardens” says the invitation (their emphases) SEE MAIN STORY. Mincha will be at 18:00 followed by Kabelat Shabbat. The service will be conducted by Shaun Zagenoev and the Drosha by Rabbi Jonathan Fox.

And, while nobody expected anything but success, “Not even the most optimistic predictions among all of us working on the Project came close to what eventually took place!” says Rabbi Goldstein, who attributes it's success to SA Jewry.     Reporting in mainstream Israeli newspaper ARUTZ SHEVA on Tuesday, Chaim Lev wrote that the fugitive “head of Shuvu Banim (Breslov) sect Rabbi Eliezer Berland, wanted for sex crimes in Israel, once against manages to evade South African police. The incident was almost a mirror-image of his previous escape – a wedding, a look-alike, and R. Berland slips away. Hundreds of his supporters are pouring in for the holidays.
