    Over the past few years Chev volunteers have been very visible in Jewish suburbs on Purim day. In their purple t-shirts and crazy costumes, under purple canopies with giant (yes, purple) Tzedokah boxes, they identified the Mitzvah of Matanot l’Evyonim – giving charity to the poor of your city – with the Chev’s work and made it an accessible and easy Mitzvah for the community to accomplish.

    Chabad.org, the Lubavitch website, “aims to bring people together from across the world." And they sure have achieved that! The website is celebrating its 25th birthday this month and has had 37-million unique visitors over the past year. Not bad when one realises that the highest estimates for the total world Jewish population is less than half of that number!

    British Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis brought message of openness to Limmud UK this week. Keeping to their principle of not elevating any speaker, organisers didn't introduce him as he took the podium.     "We need to say thank you to Madiba and his generation,” Thabo Mbeki said. “After centuries of conflict, we come together now ... to celebrate his life, ask what legacy he left and have serious reflection on the future... The task of transformation is more difficult than the Struggle.” Mbeki received a standing ovation, as did Chief Rabbi Goldstein who expressed gratitude for the tremendous benefits South Africans, including the Jewish community, enjoyed.

    Knesset told that Canadian Charedi kids were hit with iron bars & denied food, that Lev Tahor sect achieved compliance by inflicting constant pain & forcing members to wear shoes that were too small. Ex-members also spoke of forced divorce and marriage from the age of 14, involving age gaps such as a 15-year-old boy marrying a 40-year-old woman.
