    'Untrustworthy' Berland’s bail request denied

    Justice Fayeeza Kathree-Setiloane tells "well-connected" rabbi that he remains a flight risk as he awaits extradition to Israel over alleged sex crimes. The fugitive rabbi asked the court for bail and a review of his extradition order as well as "guarantees" if he is, in fact, to be extradited to Israel. The judge heard that the rabbi was igniting a culture clash with South African courts and prisons.

    Two men - one in Cape Town and one in Johannesburg – finally succumbed to community pressure and came to the Beth Din to sign their gets last week after numerous reports appeared in the SA Jewish Report and on the Go-Getters Facebook page about men who had refused to sign the Jewish divorce decree - including the naming and shaming of Capetonian Anthony Sherman by the Beth Din.

    An urgent application was launched at the Joburg High Court last Thursday in a bid to get bail for sex-pest rabbi, Eliezer Berland, who has been jailed pending extradition since before Pesach. On June 3 the Minister of Justice, Michael Masutha, signed the extradition order which had been issued in April – the final step required for the extradition to take place.

    Members of Cape Town’s Jewish and Muslim communities, made history last Shabbos as some 30 Muslims performed Maghrib, their sunset prayer, inside a Wynberg Progressive shul on Friday evening – all in aid of furthering interfaith relations.“More than ever, Jews and Muslims particularly need to talk together now,” the shul’s rabbi told Jewish Report afterwards.     In a surprise development today (Thursday, June 23), Rabbi Eliezer Berland, head of the Shuvu Banim Breslov sect who has been on the run from Israeli justice on sex allegations for three years, has applied to the SA High Court for bail pending an application to overturn the extradition ruling issued against him just before Pesach.

Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein was a guest of honour at the Conference of European Rabbis in Vienna, Austria recently, as well as at the annual Rabbinical Conference in France. “It reflects our own community’s growing standing as an important part of the global Jewish community,” Rabbi Goldstein said on his return.     The community colloquium that has been called by the Cape Council of the SA Jewish Board of Deputies on the kol isha issue for Monday and which is likely to be heard by the Cape Equality Court in August should the matter not be resolved, has been widely criticised as not being representative of the community. Cape Board chair Marx hits back, explaining why it is and tells JR Online about some changes. This is not a question of religion, say the litigants.
