    Members of Cape Town’s Jewish and Muslim communities, made history last Shabbos as some 30 Muslims performed Maghrib, their sunset prayer, inside a Wynberg Progressive shul on Friday evening – all in aid of furthering interfaith relations.“More than ever, Jews and Muslims particularly need to talk together now,” the shul’s rabbi told Jewish Report afterwards.     In a surprise development today (Thursday, June 23), Rabbi Eliezer Berland, head of the Shuvu Banim Breslov sect who has been on the run from Israeli justice on sex allegations for three years, has applied to the SA High Court for bail pending an application to overturn the extradition ruling issued against him just before Pesach.

    About 80 representatives of the South African Jewish community’s shuls, community organisations and youth groups, all affiliates of the Cape Council of the South African Jewish Board, attended a much anticipated community colloquium in Cape Town to try and head off an Equality Court case brought by two observant Orthodox Jews who object to women being refused the right to sing at secular events hosted by secular communal organisations this past Monday.

    The Shabbos Project has become a grassroots project with a life of its own - driven by the people for the people! Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein was a guest of honour at the Conference of European Rabbis in Vienna, Austria recently, as well as at the annual Rabbinical Conference in France. “It reflects our own community’s growing standing as an important part of the global Jewish community,” Rabbi Goldstein said on his return.     The community colloquium that has been called by the Cape Council of the SA Jewish Board of Deputies on the kol isha issue for Monday and which is likely to be heard by the Cape Equality Court in August should the matter not be resolved, has been widely criticised as not being representative of the community. Cape Board chair Marx hits back, explaining why it is and tells JR Online about some changes. This is not a question of religion, say the litigants.

    The Regulatory Board of Brit Mila in South Africa, which was inaugurated in March this year, has made huge strides in creating a governance structure. As part of the process, the new regulatory body last week brought out one of the world’s foremost authorities on circumcision and the management and registration of mohelim, Dr Joseph Spitzer, from London (pictured left). All the mohelim from around South Africa came together for an extensive all-day workshop.
