The power of the people always triumphs in the end.”

    Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein (pictured) accompanied by Rabbi Gideon Pogrund formed part of an interfaith meeting called by Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande in Johannesburg last week. Dr Nzimande is currently seeking the broadest possible community input into his quest to solve the crisis over university fees and student demand that there should be no increase at all - for the second year running.

    Gardens Shul - glorious past, bright future

    It all began in September, 1841, when 17 men gathered for the Kol Nidrei service at the home of Benjamin Norden, which today forms part of the Mount Nelson Hotel. The next month, the Cape Town Hebrew Congregation, the first in the country, was officially founded.

    Cemetery in sad state & no funds for repair

    The Jewish cemetery in Roodepoort on the West Rand is in a sorry state of disrepair, with nearly a third of the tombstones broken or pushed over. There is also no wall to demarcate the area from the general cemetery. Unfortunately, no Jewish congregation remains to deal with the problem, nor are there funds available to carry out the necessary restoration.

But now she is getting help from the Cape Town branch of the Union of Jewish Woman (UJW) who has launched a campaign they hope will persuade the rabbonim and community leaders to help secure a get from the man who is getting married in a civil ceremony this Sunday.

    BD warns on Pesach chickens from PnP

    The kashrut division of the Johannesburg Beth Din has issued a Kosher Alert regarding the purchase of Pesachdik chickens from Pick n Pay. The Beth Din warns that they “have been informed that some non Pesachdik stock has found its way into the Pesach section at Pick n Pay Norwood.” Although the BD mentions PnP three times, it is probably good advice to check in any case at all outlets.

The event also served as a big bang launch for the latest Jewish unity/identity project from the Office of the Chief Rabbi - Avot 101. Sinai-X moved to Durban this Thursday, before finishing up in Cape Town on Sunday.

The plush event was held on Monday night in New York (Tuesday in SA). The star-studded gala was held in in New York City and honorees in attendance included Britain’s Secretary of State for Justice Michael Gove, News Corporation Chairman Rupert Murdoch and famed philosopher and humanitarian Bernard-Henri Lévy.
