    Popular UOS Executive Director Darren Sevitz (pic), is leaving after 14 years’ service. This has been done “in order to maximise efficiencies and improve levels of service delivery to the community”, UOS Chairman Jonathan Levitt told Jewish Report Online today. The UOS, said Levitt, “has embarked on a strategic restructure” & as part of this restructure the UOS decided to replace Darren's position with 2 new positions”. Levitt praised Sevitz for serving “with dedication”. Asked if he had anything to add to the UOS’ statement today, Sevitz declined to comment. Read the full story…

    Shabbos Project to wow the world next week

    The Shabbos Project, now a wordwide event, takes place around the country on October 24 and 25. But activities begin on Wednesday October 22 in Cape Town. Kol Hakavod to Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein for this initiative which he launched so successfully in SA last year. So well supported was the 2013 event, that numerous communities around the world have joined in this year. Read about the events and how to sign up to join become part of the Shabbos Project 2014.

    Rabbi Nachman Bernard combined Torah and love

    Over 500 people (on Monday night, October 6) attended a tribute at the Oxford Shul to Rabbi Nachman Bernhard, who died in Johannesburg the week before. He was the rabbi at the shul for 35 years from 1965 until his retirement. Chief Rabbi Goldstein paid tribute to R. Bernhard’s “awesome work”. He “was friend to all”. Lubavitch Foundation head R. Lipskar spoke of R. Bernhard as a shaliach of the Rebbe. Adrian Gore, CEO of the Discovery Group and a member of the shul, said R. Bernhard was the quintessential community rabbi - positive, a patriot, never treating Judaism as just a bunch of rituals.

    A serious crisis is looming for observant Johannesburg Jews, as the supply of kosher meat dwindles way below the demand, due to factors difficult to control. This will be particularly sorely felt as Rosh Hashanah approaches. “We’re holding in the short term,” says UOS exec director Sevitz about supply, by making more use of the other facilities. The UOS is pulling all the stops to find a new facility, but has had no complaints from consumers regarding supply shortages...yet!

    A recent circumcision in Johannesburg “which resulted in injury to the baby”, has prompted the Chief Rabbi and the rosh Beth Din to establish a commission of enquiry, headed by a retired justice, to investigate this case. A media statement issued jointly by Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein and Rosh Beth Din Rabbi Moshe Kurtstag, said the commission of enquiry would be headed by retired Justice Phillip Levinsohn, former Deputy Judge President of KwaZulu-Natal.

  • Rabbi Herring promises to make good

    After being singled out for selling Pasul (un-kosher) Mezuzim and other items, Rabbi Herring says “I sincerely apologise for this unintentional occurrence and for any inconvenience that it may cause.” He has blamed his Israeli suppliers and has offered to pay for the checking (and replacement if needs be) of all items he has sold. BD director Dayan Klein says it is “an obligation” for Herrings customers “to have their merchandise checked as soon as possible.”
