    Sad end to Durban’s Great Synagogue

    Tinged with nostalgia and sadness, last Sunday members of the Great Synagogue in Silverton Road in Durban, attended a special valedictory service on the shul’s closing. Addressing the gathering, spiritual leader Rabbi Pinchas Zekry, spoke of the mixed feelings accompanying the closing down of this magnificent shul.

    Camp fires, music, good friends, beaches and volley ball... I was transported back to my youth when I visited all the summer camps this past December. I realised that so much of my Jewish identity and sense of belonging was nurtured during my time spent at summer camp. So all these years later, I returned as “camp inspector”, prepared to inspect and ensure compliance - to do my job. But the amount of fun and inspiration I gained from being there was an unexpected surprise.

    Gerald Leissner, “Mr Community”, one of South African Jewry’s top leaders, who spearheaded its move to democracy in the 1990s, passed away on Friday, December 16 in Johannesburg at the age of 74. He was buried in West Park Jewish Cemetery on the same day.

    The master of ceremonies at the ANC's 105th birthday bash at Soweto's Orlando Stadium last weekend called on “Dr Ethel Phillips, from Judaism”, pictured, to say a prayer. In reality, Dr Phillips is a chaplain with the National Interfaith Council of South Africa. She said the wrong prayer (recited on wassing) and got some words wrong - like bemitzvotavu (sic). This embarrassment was was followed by another woman who was ostensibly representing the Muslim faith. Watch this hilarious incident and see what you think.
