    Born in France and raised in Montreal, Bronya Slavin Shaffer will be coming to South Africa for Pesach and to conduct an all-women seder at the Bon Riviera at the Vaal, where her son-in-law, Rabbi Ari Kievman, has arranged a Pesach retreat for the entire Passover period.

    Last week the Chev arranged a shloshim service at Yeshiva College for the late Brent Sloman, pictured here with me. Brent was always ready with a welcoming smile and friendly words whenever people visited Selwyn Segal. His loss will be deeply felt by his family, residents and staff at the Centre. It will also be felt by the community.

    Prof Zeblon Vilakazi, acting-VC at Wits (pictured), asked Jewish Report on Wednesday to assure Jewish students that the university was doing its utmost to firmly deal with BDS’ illegal actions of beginning Israel Apartheid Week seven days early and thus illegally creating an ongoing stand-off with Wits' management. The question remains: will Wits walk the strong talk its offering and conveyed to the Jewish community?

    Israel's top diplomat to visit SA next week

    In what is thought to be the highest level of diplomatic engagement between Israel and South Africa in many years, Ambassador Jerry Matthews Matjila, director-general of the SA Department of International Relations and Co-operation (Dirco), has invited his Israeli counterpart, the director-general of Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ (MFA), Dore Gold, to hold bilateral talks in Pretoria next week.

    Threat to sue writer, newspapers over din rodef

    Sunday Times’ assistant editor, Jeremy Gordin, who broke the story that was the top-trending news story in Israel on Monday, has received letters from attorneys representing Shuvu Banim International, demanding a retraction and an amendment on the newspaper's website, or else… It is understood that both the newspaper and Israeli daily Haaretz have received similar letters.

    Musli sticks to rigid bail conditions

    Suspected Israeli mob boss, Shai Musli, wanted for complicity in murder and numerous other charges by the Israeli government, appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on January 18 and was granted bail of R100 000 on January 19. Jewish Report was surprised that the SA security authorities had gone against their own policy of never granting bail in extradition cases and seldom in Schedule 6 offences, such as murder.

    After a week of silence from Rav Berland, whom Interpol and the Hawks attempted to detain and extradite to Israel on a warrant for solicitation, his Shuvu Banim Breslov sect today, Tuesday, issued a voice recording in which he rubbishes claims of animosity Rabbi Goldstein. “Chief Rabbi Goldstein is my most faithful friend,” said Rav Berland today.     Followers say it was divine intervention; police say Rabbi Berland was tipped off. One way or another, as reported extensively by Jewish Report, and other major papers, armed police raided the Midrand hotel where 500 members of the Shuvu Banim Breslov sect were staying last Shabbos. The Friday night raid failed to catch Berland, the sect's leader, who had been present but managed to escape the Hawks once again.

    After five months and much searching, Jewish report was able to identify where the followers of Rabbi Berland were staying. Around 200 people in family units arrived with Berland in the latter half of 2015. Their numbers are now reportedly over 500. This represents the rabbi, his bodyguards and handlers and over sixty family units according to the Sunday Times. Read how Jewish Report relentlessly sought them out - and found them!

    PE lawyer hits back, suing Board

    “JEWS PER SE ARE PEACE-LOVING PEOPLE” said PE lawyer Maureen Jansen, pictured, this week, vowing to sue the SAJBD which had laid a hate speech complaint against her last week with the SAHRC. The matter related to a Facebook rant, of which Board chair Jeff Katz said: “Such hate-mongering goes beyond defaming and threatening any particular group of people; they go against the culture of non-racialism.” “Bloody Israelis should be exterminated along with all the ‘Jews’ everywhere who support Israel” posted Jansen.

    Website soared in holidays. Newsletter test

    This is a test of placing the Jewish Report Online newsletter on the website. The weekly JR newsletter is sent out to a twenty-thousand-plus database. This edition was sent in the week ending January 9 and only some of the pictures are included in this test post. It was, as always, a busy period for our website as there was a four week hiatus of print publishing. The website published 24/6 to keep readers up to date, posting 76 stories and sending out three newsletters in the three weeks.

    President Zuma read significant parts of a document entitled: “Statement of the National Executive Committee” (NEC) at the ANC's 104th birthday party last Shabbos. The statements on the Middle East made up a mere three paragraphs of the 7,000-word NEC statement, but marks the first time that Zuma has personally uttered a statement discouraging travel – albeit with his ANC hat on - to Israel. This, say pundits, marks a significant change over the same documents and speeches from previous years.

    Man on a mission - and he accomplished it

    Professor Reuben Musiker, who passed away recently, was active in the field of bibliography for over 40 years with six books and over 150 articles to his credit. One of, if not the, pre-eminent South African librarians, Musiker worked at some of the country’s most prestigious institutions – both before his retirement in 1991, and afterwards. His book “The Special Libraries of South Africa” was published in 1970 by Scarecrow Press in the US.

    Santa Pelham – a legend in her time, who gained world-wide acclaim with her commissioned memoir “Santa’s Story” and its one-woman dramatic adaptation performed by her diva daughter Aviva Pelham (Sulcas) - passed away in Cape Town on the last day of Chanukah at the age of 97.
