    a six-month long episode in the life of SA Jewry ended last night when the applicants in the Equality Court case where two Orthodox Jews (later joined by an interfaith group affiliated to Progressive Jewry) took up a position against the Cape Board over the issue of women singing at secular functions, reached an amicable out-of-court settlement. The spat ended when all parties in the hard-fought saga signed off on a negotiated settlement agreement. It is over, finish and klaar!

    Our Kibbutz Lubner residents moved across to their new home at Beit Netanya on the Selwyn Segal campus in the week preceding Pesach. That timing was chosen because most Kibbutz residents would historically move into Selwyn Segal for the Pesach festival anyway, so they would feel minimal disruption in their schedule to allow them time to acclimatise.

    While the SA Jewish Board of Deputies is a completely transformed and well-oiled machine, says newly inducted national chairman Jeff Katz, he hopes to add a new, personal focus “to enhance the wonderful work” that it has already done - he told Jewish Report in an exclusive interview this week. Jeff Katz spoke openly and transparently on issues such as BDS, Hamas, anti-Semitism and where he would like to see SA Jewry going in the next few years. He is upbeat both about the country and the role the community can play in it.

    The back-and-forth of public rhetoric between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli lobbyists in SA has, since the 2014 Gaza incursion, never reached the heights that it has since the ANC/Hamas fiasco which was closely followed by what one pundit called “scandalous and blatantly open politicking” that has seen the Independent Media Group (previously Independent Media and, prior to that, the Argus Group) and groups allied to the US NGO BDS - Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (Israel) and its allies over the almost six-year-old Mavi Marmara incident.

    Anti-Israel activists 'liars' say Fed & Board

    Chairmen, pictured left, Ben Swartz and Jeff Katz, issued a joint statement on Thursday saying “anti-Israel activists caught in lie” - and not for the first time - over supposed SAPS arrest warrant for 4 Israeli military commanders. “These claims have been shown to be outright falsehoods,” says the media release issued in their name. Dr Iqbal Survé, who heads up the Independent Media Group, told Jewish Report that he had launched two high-level investigations into the matter. He's returning from overseas at the end of the month.

    Fed’s Swartz bashes Independent Newspapers

    In a statement issued by Ben Swartz, national chairman of the SA Zionist Federation this morning, he challenges the Independent Media Group to publish the letter (from the police, which the story source claimed to be "not at liberty to disclose") on which all these claims have been made. Swartz quotes police spokesman‚ Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, who denied these claims.

In all likelihood, all or most of the issues raised will indeed feature in what will effectively constitute a “State of the Nation” address specifically geared towards South African Jewry.

South Africa’s most widely-read weekly flip-flopped, deciding to run a paid advert exposing Hamas’ jihadist outlook and methods, that it had pulled at the last minute the previous week.     SAZF strongly condemns Hamas visit to SA

    During these past few weeks of barbaric violence targeting Israel, Hamas has enthusiastically endorsed the cold-blooded murder of Israeli civilians and instigated dozens of lethal attacks against them. The SA Zionist Federation (SAZF) said in a media release under the names of its chairman, Ben Swartz and president, Avrom Krengel, that it condemns “in the strongest terms possible” the fact that a delegation representing the Hamas Central Committee will be visiting South Africa as the honoured guests of the ruling party.

    Huddle Park development: Last word not spoken. A controversial development of 450 houses and a small shopping and office centre alongside the Huddle Park golf course in Johannesburg, is scheduled to be settled on September 30. But it seems that there is some confusion among the public and that the City of Johannesburg has apparently not met the statutory requirements in terms of notifying all objectors about the times and dates of the meetings next Wednesday, on the Investec development.

    After an exhaustive search for the right candidate, The SAZF has appointed Nicci Raz (pictured) as their new national director. Incumbent Isla Feldman waxed lyrically to Jewish Report on Raz's appointment. As Isla’s 35-year-long reign draws to an end, she says Nicci is the right choice. Fed national chairman Ben Swartz is also full of praise for Raz: “Nicci brings … traits that are ideally suited to the large task at hand,” he says. Nicci’s appointment is effective from October and she will have a few months of hand-over until Feldman officially steps down in December.

    Sandwiches for Africa, to CAP Mandela Day

    Community Active Protection (CAP) spread the love this year with its highly successful Mandela Day initiative. CAP’s call to the community to “bring the bread and the spread and we’ll distribute the sandwiches to needy causes across Johannesburg”, was a huge success. More than 40 000 sandwiches were counted in total. However, boxes filled with sandwiches were still arriving long after the counting had closed.

    The first Jewish boarding facility in SA was opened in the Forties by the SA Jewish Board of Education and named after Harry Herber, the founder of Greatermans. Herber House‘s hostel was an imposing castle-like structure on the Kopje in South Street, Yeoville – opposite the now- iconic Ponte building. The hostel provided boarding for Jewish school pupils from SA country districts and other African nations during the 1940's, 50's and 60's before being closed. At a recent reunion – see picture of attendees – R1,600 was collected for Hatzolah.

    Muhammed Desai tells SAJR Online that the mere fact that opposing BDS has become the main dominating campaign both in Israel & among SA organisational Jewry shows that BDS is moving from being an irritation to a serious problem and a threat to Israel in its current form. SAZF national chairman, Ben Swartz, says however that BDS-SA’s attempt to create a parallel between the struggle for freedom in SA and the situation in the ME “has backfired as it has been seen as an insult by all South Africans who suffered and lived under the Apartheid regime”.

    A major focus of the 2008 Global Forum to Combat Anti-Semitism (GFCA) was to confront the escalating phenomenon of anti-Semitism in the social media. In a report presented on that occasion, this was defined as “the use of online social networking and content collaboration to share demonisation, conspiracy theories, Holocaust denial and classical anti-Semitic motifs with a view to creating social acceptability for such content”.

    More than 20 mothers from Cape Town & Johannesburg are among the Jewish Women's Renaissance Programme’s largest delegation yet to visit Israel. Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs recently threw its weight behind the US-based group. JWRP “is a kind of ‘Birthright for Mothers’,” Jeremy Ruden, a spokesman for the ministry, told Jewish Report Online today. Founded in the US in 2008, JWRP started taking Jewish mothers from around the world to Israel in 2009. Founding director Lori Palatnik has spoken in SA.

    WIZO Johannesburg’s 101st AGM last month marked the “changing of the guard” of the WIZO Johannesburg executive. Lee Joffe and Andrea Wainer were elected new co-chairmen. Syd Lowenthal, auditor of WIZO Johannesburg, supervised the voting procedures and announced the incoming executive committee. Besides new co-chairmen Joffe and Wainer, Cindy Polakow, Shoshi Shachar and Andie Schwartz were elected as vice-chairmen, and Janine Rabbie and Yente Super as honorary co-treasurers.

    SA Jewry decided enough is enough and held a protest outside the Sea Point Woolworths store where the pig’s head was placed in a halaal section by a clearly confused Cosas. Under the auspices of the SAJBD, who have laid charges of hate speech with the SAHRC earlier in the week, only 50 protesters were allowed. The pig’s head had been smuggled in a baby’s pram.
