Help UJW leave its footprint

Mandela Day is a time for giving back and this year the UJW is pulling the community together to make a united contribution to needy children, the UJW says in a media release.

Many children from poor homes go to school in tattered school uniforms and broken shoes. The UJW is appealing to the Jewish community to collect as many school shoes as possible for distribution to children who cannot afford to buy shoes. Far too many young disadvantaged children throughout the country still go to school barefoot in summer and winter and we hope, with your help, to make a huge difference.”

The project runs from May until Mandela Day at the beginning of June, during which time the UJW will be purchasing shoes with donations received from the community; R100 buys one pair, “or collecting the new shoes you have chosen to purchase yourself”.

“Should you already be supporting a disadvantaged school, please let us know numbers and sizes of children there, so that they can be fitted out as well. A pair of socks to accompany the shoes would be very welcome.”

The UJW says these donations and/or shoes will be collected on a regular basis from participating schools or they can be deposited at the following collection points and they will be delivered to the needy schools: UJW Office 1 Oak Street, Houghton; 19 Sixth Avenue, Houghton; and 29 Algernon Road, Norwood.

Donations account no: Standard Bank AC no 001674218 Code 007205 Ref Mandela.
