    California may ban BDS from campuses

    Monday was the fifth anniversary of the US State Dept coming up with its own definition of anti-Semitism as it felt Europe’s was too parev. Last week, the US pro-Israel definition was provisionally adopted on the University of California’s 10 campuses, with a community of 400 000. This move is set to cause a major setback for BDS which may even be banned on the campuses. Anti-Semitism watchdog, Amcha, says there is a direct correlation between BDS activity and anti-Semitism on US campuses.

    Today, SAJR publishes the introduction to an 8-part series of articles on the 1,8-mil Jews who fought in Allied armies during WWII. Shabbos marks the 71st anniversary of the D-Day landings. That was almost 20% of all Jews remaining alive in 1945! 250 000 died in combat and nearly 200 000 after being taken as Nazi POWs.     AJC is hopping mad as Rabbi Riskin inadvertently creates a humanitarian crisis in Africa. This as well as the major brouhaha building up in international Jewish media about the most respected Mizrachi rabbi, Shlomo Riskin, pictured. Riskin is the Chief Rabbi of the settlement of Efrat, where many South Africans Olim (immigrants) have settled who has been summoned to a hearing by the office of the Chief Rabbinate in Israel scheduled for 29 June.

    Libya ‘sought discreet relationship with Israel’

    The recently-released exposé of Hillary Clinton (pictured) when she was US Secretary of State, reported by Eliezer Sherman in the New York Times last month, indicated, among other things, preliminary back-channel discussions were held to try and facilitate ties between post-Gaddafi Libya & Israel. This will no doubt have left French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy feeling vindicated after 2011 denials of his exposing the Libyan plan to forge better ties with the Jewish state left a scandal in its wake.

    Mikvah-peeping rabbi sentenced to 6.5 years

    Washington’s once-senior Orthodox rabbi, Barry Freundel was sentenced last Friday to six and a half years in prison after admitting he had taken videos of dozens of nude women at a mikvah over an extended period of time. He was also engaged in extramarital sexual encounters with several women which he had taped.

    More than 20 mothers from Cape Town & Johannesburg are among the Jewish Women's Renaissance Programme’s largest delegation yet to visit Israel. Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs recently threw its weight behind the US-based group. JWRP “is a kind of ‘Birthright for Mothers’,” Jeremy Ruden, a spokesman for the ministry, told Jewish Report Online today. Founded in the US in 2008, JWRP started taking Jewish mothers from around the world to Israel in 2009. Founding director Lori Palatnik has spoken in SA.

Dr Husam Zomlot, the keynote speaker at many of the City of Johannesburg’s “Palestinian Solidarity Week” events, is PA President Mahmoud Abbas’ close aide. Zomlot is infamous for telling a BBC interviewer that “Israel 'fabricated' the beheading of James Foley and the Holocaust. Dr Zomlot’s official title is: “Director of the Commission for International Relations in Palestine”.

    Rabbi pleads guilty to 52 "Peeping Tom" charges

    Red-faced Rabbi, 63, the former spiritual leader of a prominent Washington Orthodox shul, pleaded guilty to 52 counts of misdemeanor voyeurism last week after police found secret cameras hidden in the mikvah shower & recording devices in his home. The trial had to moved to a bigger court as the crowd grew. Rabbi Freundel was originally arrested on 6 charges last October. Freundel separated from his wife after his arrest and refused to leave his shul-owned home. The congregation has taken the case to the Beth Din of America.

    More Arab states ban new Exodus movie

    Several more Arab countries have followed Morocco and then Egypt, which banned the release of the film “Exodus: Gods and Kings.” Egypt on Friday barred what its culture minister called a “Zionist film”, adding that it “gives a Zionist view of history and contains historical inaccuracies, and that’s why we have decided to ban it,” Egypt's Culture Minister Gaber Asfour told the French news agency AFP.

    Battleground Belgium - hotbed of anti-Semitism

    SCARY STUFF: Belgium has become the epicentre of violent anti-Semitic attacks this year - with over 30 “severe” events reported between Jan 1 & Nov 24. But the problem is symptomatic of similar outbursts throughout Europe.     Alan Gross (pic in Cuban jail) was jailed for trying to connect Cuba’s isolated Jews to the wider world. He was released after five years as part of a greater US/Cuba relaxation of relations that may do just what Gross set out to - and much more to boot! Gross’ flight home to suburban Washington with his wife, Judy, last week was part of a historic deal that overturns over five decades of US policy isolating the Communist island nation helmed by the Castro brothers.

    US union activists are set to oppose a decision by UAW 2865 – the local union chapter which represents more than 13,000 teaching assistants, tutors, and other student-workers at the University of California – to join the BDS campaign. The vote and abuse of the system was antithetical to the most basic principles of labour, said the Teamsters. BDS opponents were intimidated in flagrant violation of union rules, , polls were staffed by pro-BDS campaigners, and attempts were made to forcibly evict anti-BDS voters.
