    Oct 29, 2014 3 Comments
The extent of media coverage of the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa has surpassed even the swine influenza scare of 2009. Much of it has been alarming and global bodies have responded accordingly. On August 8 the Director-General of the World Health Organisation declared the disease a public health emergency of international concern. PROFESSOR BARRY SCHOUB, recipient of the Jewish Report Achiever Award for Arts, Science, Sports & Culture in 2012, volunteered his services to explain more about it for SAJR readers. This is a fascinating read…

Add strings to Gaza donor funding: Bedein

    Oct 18, 2014 1 Comment
Donors should insist on auditing the organisation; introduce UNHCR standards to UNRWA; cancel jihadist curriculum & dismiss employees affiliated with Hamas says David Bedein. UNRWA teaches principles of Jihad & martyrdom in a UN school system which is supposed to promote the UNRWA slogan of “Peace Starts Here”. In reality, the UN agency’s education programme includes paramilitary training. UNRWA should be required to demonstrate a commitment to the sacred UN principles of peace and reconciliation, says Bedein. Read more...

They used to say that you know you have REALLY made it if you are depicted on a stamp. These days, a higher honour goes to those few who find themselves on the daily Google-search bar. Hannah Arendt today received both, as Google honoured what would have been her 108th birthday (pic left) and she has been depicted on a German stamp! Read about this fascinating philosopher, her ties with Einstein and others and her amazing achievements.

Shaw notes PM delivered “bold but dark speech” at UN last week, but was “more conciliatory with his remarks” at the White House. Read his assessment… “Bibi gave us a clue as to what he may have been thinking as he sat with Obama,” writes regular Jewish Report contributor Barry Shaw, adding that Bibi had said we should “seize upon common interests and build positive progress to advance a more secure, prosperous and peaceful Middle East.”

Justice Dennis Davis’ weekly show on ENCA, “Judge for Yourself,” this week put Avrom Krengel and Muhammed Desai head-to-head, joined by Daily Maverick Associate Editor and Former US Diplomat Brooks Spector, on SA’s diplomatic approach to the Gaza conflict. During the sometimes heated exchanges, Desai only spoke of sanctions of Israeli products. SAJR asked him if this represented a policy change. See what he had to say…

    Sep 01, 2014 1 Comment
THE TOP-10: Scarlett Johansson (pictured), Gwyneth Paltrow and the power couple Beyonce and Jay-Z (seriously) were among those who made news on the Jewish entertainment scene in 5774. Here are some of the top moments from the Jewish year just departed. Then there’s Mel Brooks, the first Jewish “Bachelorette”, Sarah Silverman thanking “my Jews”, Hollywood’s Gaza Twitter war, Miss Margalit and The Baby Biggs brit. While some of this may be more amusing for SAJR’s foreign audience, which numbers around 30 per cent, it is all a lot of fun.

Dr Ruth is an absolute hoot! SAJR’s non-executive director, Howard Sackstein, interviewed her late on Monday night SA time over Skype. Ant Katz was on hand to record the event – except when he was laughing too raucously to type and had to refer to the recording afterwards.
