    Alan Gross (pic in Cuban jail) was jailed for trying to connect Cuba’s isolated Jews to the wider world. He was released after five years as part of a greater US/Cuba relaxation of relations that may do just what Gross set out to - and much more to boot! Gross’ flight home to suburban Washington with his wife, Judy, last week was part of a historic deal that overturns over five decades of US policy isolating the Communist island nation helmed by the Castro brothers.

    In 1915 a committee in Egypt approved Jabotinsky & Trumpeldor's plan to form a military unit of Russian Jewish émigrés to assist to liberate Palestine from the Ottomans. Under the UK Army Act enlisting foreign nationals as fighting troops was a no-no, so they formed a volunteer transport Mule Corps. Later intervention allowed them to become Jewish Battalions & fought as as the Jewish Legion or "Judeans". Along the way they became legendary boxing champions both within and, later, outside the army – such as World Champ Bennie Goldberg, pictured. A great read...

    Ailing and respected Mervyn Smith passes

    It was just after 21:00 SA time last night when Ann Harris, vice-president of the African Jewish Congress, informed friends & colleagues of the passing of AJC President Mervyn Smith on Shabbos. A lawyer by profession, Mervyn Smith served in various roles on the SA Jewish Board of Deputies and played a significant role in the Struggle through his many anti-apartheid activities. His loss will be deeply mourned throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

    300 Breslovers descend on holiday retreat for Yom Kippur with Rabbi Berland. The only problem was that the Jewish-owned campsite only has a capacity for 30, the number booked for, & the island municipality of Texel in the country’s north issued an order for the removal of the other 270 Shuvu Bonim Breslovers last Friday ahead of Yom Kippur according to the Noordhollands Dagblad daily newspaper. The visitors came from various countries to spend the holiday with Berland, who was arrested and released in the Netherlands last month after Israel could not show a Dutch court proof that an arrest warrant had been issued for R. Berland.

    Rabbi Eliezer Berland is in the hands of the Dutch authorities – who are being supported by the Israeli authorities – at Schipol Airport in Holland where he was intercepted on his way to Uman in Ukraine for the annual pilgrimage to the home of their Rebbe. The million dollar question everyone is asking, is how did he get out of SA? Also unknown is if the rebbetzen or any other followers or bodyguards were travelling with him.
