    JR, Absa sign another sponsorship deal

    On Wednesday morning this week Absa Bank and the South African Jewish Report signed a further multi-year contract for the bank’s continued sponsorship of the prestigious annual Jewish Achiever Awards. The 2016 event is the 15th consecutive event to be sponsored by the bank.

    Jewish-owned 'Achievers support Springboks

    Bidvest and Blue Label Telecoms jumped in and lent their support to the Springboks after Absa pulled its sponsorship - or there may not have been an inbound tour right now. This is probably the first time ever that two predominantly Jewish-owned companies are involved in sponsoring the Springbok rugby team. All three majority owners are past winners of Jewish Report's Absa Jewish Achiever business awards.

    Wits bestows doctorate on Bidvest’s Joffe

    Brian Joffe, who graduated from Wits University as a chartered accountant in 1971, received his honorary doctorate degree from Wits University Chancellor Justice Dikgang Moseneke, at the graduation ceremony for the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management today (Wednesday, March 29). Bidvest Group has become one of the leading corporations in SA - with a global footprint – and a turnover of over R200 billion. Today, Bidvest employs more than 145 000 - over 125 000 of them in SA.

    Jewish Report apologises to PESACH for stealing a headline that belongs squarely to that particular chag, while reviewing a publication that itself belongs to the Jewish New Year - just prior to Rosh Hashanah. The fact is that, in general, "a calendar is a calendar is a calendar", be it the Gregorian, Hebrew, or Chinese, as long as they offer the user the essential information he or she needs. But SA businessman Arnold Garber has been disproving this adage year after year - and 5776 is no exception.

The annual fundraiser culminates with a gala banquet which is, without question, the highlight of the Jewish Johannesburg social calendar.     Basil Kransdorff of e’Pap Technologies, a 2013 Absa Jewish Achiever Award finalist, teamed up with Magen David Adom (MDA-SA) and answered the call of Beit Emanuel's anti-xenophobia appeal – resulting in 4 500 meals being delivered to victims of xenophobia last week. The meals were delivered in the Edenvale and Germiston areas in Gauteng.

    2013 Jewish Report Lifetime Achiever awardee Natie Kirsh let rip at US President Barak Obama last week. Why was SA’s richest man so mad? Because they withdrew his beloved Swaziland’s trade incentives derived from Agoa last month. Kirsh accused US of hurting Swazi citizens in a bid to send message to King Mswati. He is a passionate Swazi citizen & said that “up to 30 000 formal sector jobs will be lost.” Kirsh refers to Swaziland as his “fourth child” & provides significant philanthropic help to business start-ups & schools in the kingdom.     Jewish Report’s 2014 Absa Jewish Achiever event was the most read about – appearing on over 4 000 web pages. One of the winners, Ivor Ichikowitz, occupied almost the entire front page of Business Times this week as a pivotal player in the newly launched low-cost airline Flyafrica, which aims to bring R50 one-way flights between Johannesburg & Cape Town.     Ebola - humanitarian tragedy on monumental scale

    The extent of media coverage of the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa has surpassed even the swine influenza scare of 2009. Much of it has been alarming and global bodies have responded accordingly. On August 8 the Director-General of the World Health Organisation declared the disease a public health emergency of international concern.     Mentalist Gilan Gork amazed the audience at the Jewish Achiever event on Sunday, by locking some predictions in a sealed box at the beginning of proceedings, hanging those predictions above the stage the entire night.
