    After three days of runaway wildfires Israel and the West Bank were ablaze today as hundreds of people were evacuated as firefighters battle to take control of the blazes. Hot and dry wind is fanning the flames, which have reached the city of Haifa and forced the temporary closure of a major Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway.

    The traditional Rosh Chodesh protest for egalitarian worship at the holiest Jewish site, the Western Wall (Kotel), saw Torah scrolls being taken to the women’s section last Wednesday morning, where they were met with pushing and shoving by charedi Orthodox worshippers. The women furthermore faced the indignation of a barrage of cries branding them “Nazis”, “goyim” and “whores”.

    Steve Linde, pictured, the recently retired SA-born editor-in-chief of the Jerusalem Post, was in Johannesburg last week where JR board chairman Howard Sackstein hosted an off-the-record dinner with him for a group of local Jewish journalists and authors. Linde shared some incredible stories and gave some very frank answers to questions which global Jewry often ponders. One would love to share some, but the privilege accorded by being off-the-record means that nobody is able to share his frank opinions and sometimes hilarious anecdotes.

    Israel’s ambassador to South Africa, Arthur Lenk (pictured), told the SA Friends of Israel (SAFI) advocacy conference earlier this month that he had hosted Israel’s immediate past President Shimon Peres in February. The 90-year-old career diplomat and politician, Peres, had come to speak to South African Jewry.
