    Israeli President Reuven Rivlin tells foreign diplomats ahead of Rosh Hashanah that wars used to take place between countries, but today a new form of warfare, waged between countries & terrorists. As country governed by Rule of Law & recognising International Law, Israel believes the international legal system now needs to provide a comprehensive and relevant judicial response to these new wars. “The international Laws of War can no longer ignore this new situation that is so very different from traditional warfare,” he said.

    SA friends of JNF have sent money to Israel for the building of two bomb shelters in the south of the country. Jewry world-wide “has made a big effort to shelter the people of the south (of Israel) and supply more shelters where ever needed,” said Amber Cummins (pictured), the administrative director of the Jewish National Fund of South Africa (JNF-SA).

    During a teleconference of all MDA “Friend” societies globally this morning, it was decided that diaspora supporters of Israel’s medical emergency and ambulance service would donate 64 ambulances in November – one for each of those who lost their lives in Operation Protective Edge.     On Wednesday kids from Gan Yavne enjoyed some respite from sirens & booms, reports Rolene, “by spending time in Modiin's municipal pool. The city of Modiin is opening its arms to our Iron Dome soldiers as well, feeding them and doing their laundry as they cannot leave their towers.” As Roro says, Israelis are remarkably resilient, warm and generous … one thing is for sure, this plucky little country is the very example of grace under pressure.

  • Peres and Bibi address Jewish media at opening

    Speaking to a room packed with journalists, Peres confirmed an earlier statement that he would be addressing the matter of the release of Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard, who has languished in an American prison for longer than the 27 years of Madiba’s incarceration in SA. Peres praised PA leader Mahmoud Abbas as a man he could trust.
