    Israel's Cabinet, at its regular weekly meeting on Sunday 20 December, approved a plan by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's and Negev, Galilee and Periphery Development Minister Aryeh Der to integrate the ultra-orthodox population in the civil service.

    Major announcements by Israeli Cabinet Sunday

    Israel’s cabinet and prime minister yesterday made some informative remarks at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting. Health Minister Litzman extended the free dental plan; Negev, Galilee and Periphery Development Minister Deri said he was tabling a “first-of-its-kind" strategy to place ultra-orthodox Jews in civil service jobs; and the PM announced a NIS 1 billion to convert the community of Harish into a new city of 50,000.

    UN: Yom Kippur now an official holiday

    The United Nations announced on Friday that it will recognise Yom Kippur as an official holiday from 2016. No official meetings will take place on the hallowed Day of Atonement at their New York headquarters and all Jewish employees of the UN will be able to miss work without it being considered leave. The matter was raised last May and Israel’s UN Ambassador, Ron Prosor, is pictured telling journalists on 10 July last year that it was "about time Jewish employees at the UN won’t be obligated to work on Yom Kippur."     New ‘development’ in investigation: Shin Bet

    There is a new “development” in the investigation into an arson attack that killed three members of a Palestinian family, the Shin Bet security service announced on Sunday after protests by right-wing Jews. The protests were in the wake of last week’s Israeli Supreme Court ruling that three of the Jewish suspects arrested in connection with the attack could be prevented from seeing their attorneys, which the Shin Bet said could harm the investigation.

    BDS turns statement of 'bored' academics around

    A local Jewish community leader pointed out that BDS sent a press release to their database this week on behalf of South African academics pledging their support for Palestinians, but BDS’ Kwara Kekana first hijacked the mail & turned a pro-Palestinian pledge into “an academic boycott of Israel”. The 204 academics were led by Profs Robert van Niekerk, Salim Vally & Steven Friedman. This is somewhat disingenuous, however, as the signatories clearly wrote: “We will … continue to work with our Israeli colleagues…” and did not mention a boycott per se.

    Ultra-wealthy Moscow suburb attracts Jews

    A luxurious Jewish community centre and 400-seat shul opened its doors this month in the affluent village of Zhukovka on the outskirts of Moscow. VIPs such as Jewish construction magnates Boris and Arkady Rotenberg, associates of Russian President Vladimir Putin, arrived for the ceremony which was officiated by Chabad Rabbi Alexander Boroda (pictured), a former Red Army soldier.     In an op-ed piece, ANT KATZ ponders over the historical move by Israel to open its first official, visible mission in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates UAE, in the coming weeks.     Musli cases remanded, provisionally for January 18. The side-by-side bail and extradition cases of Shai Musli, who Israeli police accuse of being the boss of one of Israel’s most feared crime families, was again remanded in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court last week, reportedly by consent between the prosecution and Musli’s legal team. Prosecutor Christo Steyn days Musli’s alleged crimes, for which Israel – through Interpol – is seeking his extradition, include murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
