The joint statement takes “the strongest exception” to Bapela’s “uncalled for attack against students who, under the auspices of SAIF, took part in a recent visit to Israel.

    European Maccabi Games returns to Berlin

    An official Jewish sporting event will be staged in Germany for the first time since the Second World War with the European Maccabi Games being staged in Berlin later this month. The opening ceremony will even be held in the same Olympic park as the 1936 Olympic Games, organised by Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party.

    After Dutch Court rejects appeal & authorises extradition to Israel last Tuesday, Shuvu Bonim head allegedly went to hospital in Holland. He was ordered to turn himself in to Dutch police on Monday 6 July but, it seems, R. Berland (pic) had, in fact, slipped away & fled to an undisclosed country which has no extradition treaty with Israel. He has evaded deportation for almost 3 years, twice by the Hawks in SA. Read about the Rabbi-on-the-run's spurious claims in his appeal, which held no sway with the Dutch court.

    Beth Protea, Truth be Told (TbT) and Wits Alumni co-hosted a talk in Israel on Tuesday by Marlene Bethlehem titled: Mandela and the Jewish Community. Marlene is SA’s serial communal worker and had a close and special relationship with Madiba (pictured left walking with him in Jerusalem). Marlene is also an accomplished tennis player, won the Singles Plate at Wimbledon in ’62 – and her club Champs this year despite being a sprightly 75. She was in Israel to attend the 50th Anniversary of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture, of which she is a vice president.
