Three Jewish Nobel laureates so far for 2016

  • Dylan Bob HOME
Maybe the times they are a-changing’? Bob Dylan became the first person considered primarily a musician to win the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday and the third Jew in 2016 so far. The Bard - as he is known by fans (highlighting how he is seen equally as a poet and musician) - became the fifteenth Jew to win the literature prize, joining the ranks of Saul Bellow, Isaac Bashevis Singer and Patrick Modiano.

Dylan, 75, was recognised for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”, the Swedish Academy, which is responsible for choosing the Nobel laureates in literature, announced on Thursday.

Dylan BobBorn Robert Allen Zimmerman and raised Jewish in Minnesota, Dylan wrote some of the most influential and well-known songs of the 1960s. His hits include “Blowin’ in the Wind”, “Like a Rolling Stone” and “Times They Are a-Changin’.”

Bob Dylan experimented with diverse religions over the years – but returned to his faith with a bang as a father and is today very involved in both religious and communal activity both in the US and in Israel.

Dylan is the first American to receive the prize in more than 20 years; novelist Toni Morrison won in 1993. He will receive his prize – worth over R13 million at today’s exchange rates - in Stockholm on December 10 which is Alfred Nobel’s birthday.

Dylan joins two other already-announced 2016 Jewish recipients, J Michael Kosterlitz (physics) and Oliver Hart (economics).
