Israel’s Supreme Rabbinical Court this month jailed haredi Orthodox man for 30 days for pressuring his son to withhold a divorce from his wife for more than a decade. By upholding a lower rabbinical court decision, the high court gave its blessing to an unprecedented approach to freeing women from unwanted marriages.

    a six-month long episode in the life of SA Jewry ended last night when the applicants in the Equality Court case where two Orthodox Jews (later joined by an interfaith group affiliated to Progressive Jewry) took up a position against the Cape Board over the issue of women singing at secular functions, reached an amicable out-of-court settlement. The spat ended when all parties in the hard-fought saga signed off on a negotiated settlement agreement. It is over, finish and klaar!

    UPDATED: TUESDAY 3pm: Rabbi Eliezer Berland was extradited to Israel overnight accompanied by Interpol agents. On landing at he was handed over to the Israeli police who took him into custody and he is being “questioned on suspicion of serious sex offenses.” Some fifty of his followers took the same flight. The extradition was conducted with full co-operation between the SA authorities and their Israeli counterparts - but in complete secrecy.

    R. Berland's case to be reviewed but bail denied

    Justice Fayeeza Kathree-Setiloane told Rabbi Eliezer Berland late last week in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg that as he was so "well-connected" he remained a flight risk and she therefore denied “the Rabbi on the run” bail as he awaits extradition to Israel to face charges of alleged sex crimes. The fugitive rabbi had asked the court for bail until the review of his extradition order.
