    Members of the Jewish and Japanese communities, diplomats, business leaders and Holocaust survivors, packed into the Abe Abrahamson Auditorium at Beyachad last Wednesday to remember Chiune Sugihara, the heroic Japanese diplomat who exceeded his authority to issue 6 000 life-saving visas to Jewish refugees during the Second World War.

    In response to Israel's military incursion into Gaza, an anti-Israel demonstration on Friday in Sandton opposite the Israeli Embassy Trade Office accused Israel of genocide and called for expulsion of the Israeli ambassador and the recall of South Africa's ambassador in Tel Aviv. Protesters called for termination of all trade relations with "apartheid" Israel until it ends its strikes in Gaza and stops oppressing the Palestinians.

    Ahmed Kathrada Foundation condemns attempt by Chief Rabbi to “personalise this matter by targeting the ANC’s Deputy Secretary General” & his “alleged threats” against Deputy Minister Obed Bapela at a Palestinian solidarity rally in Lenasia. Claims Chief Rabbi called him after release of ANC statement & asked him to dissociate himself from the statement, demanded its removal from ANC website. When Obed said no, he says, he reported “the Chief Rabbi indicated that there would be “consequences” for the ANC.

    In an exclusive interview with SAJR Online Monday evening, ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe refused to take responsibility for the party’s Western Cape social media communications manager, Rene Smit’s posting of a photograph of Hitler with the words "Yes man (Hitler) you were right" & "I could have killed all the Jews but I left some of them to let you know why I was killing them." Mantashe says Smit was not making statements on behalf of the ANC. SAJBD national executive director Wendy Kahn disagrees.

    Cape Town city council last week recommended developing a citywide eruv policy taking them a step closer to a 13-year goal of an enlarged eruv. Alan Levin of Sea Point says whenever Jewry tried to put in an eruv “the city tried to block it.” Last year some non-Jewish residents labelled an eruv “unconstitutional.” Says Levin: ''The city puts up 16,000 Christmas lights, the least they can do is [allow us] to put up 16 poles [between Sea Point and Camps Bay]."
