    Two more sign gets amid community outrage

    Two men - one in Cape Town and one in Johannesburg – finally succumbed to community pressure and came to the Beth Din to sign their gets last week after numerous reports appeared in the SA Jewish Report and on the Go-Getters Facebook page about men who had refused to sign the Jewish divorce decree - including the naming and shaming of Capetonian Anthony Sherman by the Beth Din.

    Members of Cape Town’s Jewish and Muslim communities, made history last Shabbos as some 30 Muslims performed Maghrib, their sunset prayer, inside a Wynberg Progressive shul on Friday evening – all in aid of furthering interfaith relations.“More than ever, Jews and Muslims particularly need to talk together now,” the shul’s rabbi told Jewish Report afterwards.     Surprise as Rabbi Berland seeks bail

    In a surprise development today (Thursday, June 23), Rabbi Eliezer Berland, head of the Shuvu Banim Breslov sect who has been on the run from Israeli justice on sex allegations for three years, has applied to the SA High Court for bail pending an application to overturn the extradition ruling issued against him just before Pesach.

    Kol isha: Colloquium and then to court

    Kol Isha - interpreted as the voice of a woman singing solo in public - has become a divisive issue within the Jewish community, culminating in two Cape Town Orthodox Jews and SACRED (the SA Centre for Religious Diversity and Equality) taking court action on constitutional grounds against the Cape Council of the SA Jewish Board of Deputies for unfair discrimination against women.

    Mystery arrival of tzadik to 'aid' Berland

    Last week Thursday, after a fraught and sometimes bizarre hearing, “Rabbi-on-the run” Eliezer Berland, wanted for sex crimes in Israel, was denied bail in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court. Migdal HaEmek Chief Rabbi HaRav Yitzchok Dovid Grossman left Israel on Sunday night and arrived in South Africa on Monday to try and assist Rabbi Berland in getting bail. According to Israeli news site, Yeshiva World, “Rav Grossman will try to calm the situation between the local community and Rabbi Berland, which some report has contributed to the court refusing him bail.”

    Mass prayers to try and defeat the odds

    On Wednesday night, the colourful Israeli supporters of Rabbi Eliezer Berland were holding a “Mass Prayer Rally” at the Cave of the Patriarchs in Chevron in Israel for the speedy release of their spiritual head. They laid on buses from all over Israel for the event. As things are going in the Randburg courtroom, the media and legal fraternity seem to believe that it is increasingly unlikely that bail will granted by Regional Magistrate Pravina Raghunandan on Thursday.

    Berland court proceedings end in a fracas

    LATEST: According to the registrar of Mr Justice Andre Louw in the Pretoria High Court, Rabbi Eliezer Berland’s attorney Themba Langa personally went to Pretoria to remove his urgent application from the roll. He then rushed back to the Randburg Magistrate’s Court where the rabbi's bail case continued until 16:00 and resumed on Thursday morning.

    Having him in custody and keeping him there are two different things as Rabbi Eliezer Berland, the man who has evaded Authorities worldwide seven times over the past 18 months, has a second stab at getting awarded bail by a Randburg magistrate. Last Thursday Berland was allowed the dignity of not having to join the general prison population and the freedom to practice his spiritual beliefs from a private cell at the Randburg police station, where he has also been given permission to confer with his own doctors.

    The 78-year-old rabbi Eliezer Berland, who was arrested by the Hawks and Interpol in Sunninghill north of Johannesburg last week Thursday, is being held in an undisclosed Pretoria hospital under heavy police guard after having complained that he was not feeling well. He is scheduled to appear in the Randburg Magistrates Court this Thursday in connection with an Interpol warrant for his extradition to Israel to answer to sexual charges there.

    Hawks nab 'elusive Pimpernel' Rabbi Berland

    The elite priority crime division of the SA Police, The Hawks, have confirmed that they arrested the 78-year-old Rabbi Eliezer Berland in Sunninghill in northern Johannesburg on Thursday. The Hawks refused to say where he was arrested or how they had found the elusive rav-on-the-run - but he will remain in custody and appear in court next Thursday. Jewish Report Online was first with the news yesterday. It had quickly been taken up by most Jewish and Israeli daily media today.

    UPDATED - RABBI IN HOSPITAL? HAWKS' STATEMENT IMMINENT! Unsubstantiated reports poured in on Thursday that the elusive Rabbi Eliezer Berland was arrested by police. At this time there were no SAPS or Hawks spokesmen on duty, but credible sources confirmed news that Rabbi Berland was arrested this morning and was being held in a cell at a police station.

    On Thursday 10 March the director-general of The Department of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa (DIRCO), Ambassador Jerry Matjile, and his counterpart from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Israel, Ambassador Dore Gold, pictured, met in Pretoria for bilateral discussions.     SAUJS’ well-planned and handsomely implemented awareness campaign ensured that they came out on top in this year’s IAW (Israel Awareness Week) vs IAW (Israel Apartheid Week) campaigns. The Israel-friendly students’ strategy hung on six tactical elements, each of which played its own part in ensuring that, what essentially boiled down to an online battle, came together with precision.
