    It was a day of human warmth, generosity, kindness and compassion when "67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day" visited three Jewish NGOs. On May 8, hand-knitted and crocheted woollen blankets were delivered to three Chevrah Kadisha organisations, Kadimah, the Junction and Selwyn Segal. Two hundred blankets were distributed to people in need, just before the chilly winter begins.

    Last Sunday’s Rebbetzins Conference at the HOD hall in Johannesburg, attracted 70 of the country’s approximately 140 rebbetzins. “It’s something I put a lot of effort and thought into and I think it’s important that we, rebbetzins, get together whenever we can to catch up, share ideas and resources and just have a great time,” says Rebbetzin Gina Goldstein, wife of Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein, who spearheaded the Conference.

    UJW Pretoria - giving for 69 years

    The Union of Jewish Women Pretoria tackle a host of outreach programmes, that include sponsoring 10 orphans at Sunnyside Primary School and other monthly food and grocery donations. The UJW Pretoria held its 69th AGM last week and Chairman Sivea Stein made a presentation to Jaffa (Pretoria’s Jewish retirement home) of an evac chair which was graciously accepted by Lesley Beckbessinger on behalf of the management committee.

    Thousands of people in the city of Lincoln lined the streets on Monday to cheer their heroes - the Lincoln City football team, nicknamed the Imps, who finished top of the table of the National League. They sealed the title when they beat Macclesfield 2-1 at their home ground of Sincil Bank and confirmed their return to the Football League after six years away.

    Helen Lieberman was “overwhelmed” when she was informed of her latest and possibly most prestigious award as Officier de la Légion d’Honneur (National Order of the Legion of Honour) “in recognition of her lifelong commitment to the eradication of poverty, injustice and human misery”. The honour is the highest that France can bestow on a foreign citizen.
