    Sandy Koufax, sometimes referred to as “the left arm of G-d”, was probably the most influential baseball pitcher who has ever lived. In honour of his brilliance, the much-loved but sometimes controversial figure is being celebrated in a statue due to be unveiled outside of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Stadium early next year.

    I’m often asked whether one should be eating soy products or avoiding them. With all the mixed messages regarding soy products, I’m not surprised there’s so much confusion. Even when one looks at the science, there’s conflicting evidence. With plant-based diets on the rise, of which soy is a big component, we almost want to ask science to make up its mind already!

    Israel to take the biggest team ever to Tokyo Olympics

    With less than nine months to go before the Tokyo Olympics, preparations for the Israeli 2020 team have begun in earnest. Israel will be sending the largest team ever assembled to next year’s Games, scheduled for July and August, with the current complement of 85 athletes beating by some margin the 47 athletes assembled for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

    Active, strong and independent at 100!

    Mina Girnun turned 100 on 13 October at Golden Acres in Sandringham in the company of family and friends from around the world. Included among her guest were Dutch Ambassador Han Peters and his wife Alessandra, who attended Girnun’s tea party, bringing with them wishes from her country of birth. Girnun was born in Amsterdam, and came to South Africa by boat when she was 18.

    Challah bake in memory of Hayley Fraser

    Eighty family and friends got together to bake challahs at Waverley Shul on 25 September to commemorate the sudden death of Hayley Fraser seven years ago on erev Yom Tov (the night before Yom Tov). More than 40 challahs were baked in the shul’s ovens. They were donated to Jewish food fund Yad Aharon & Michael.

    Members of Greenside shul came together on 6 October to create the shul’s annual giant sukkah mural, measuring 5m wide by 3.3m high. This is the third year that the community has painted a colourful canvas work of art depicting a scene from Tanach.

    Pretoria Jews come to aid of victims of Marabastad violence

    The Pretoria Council of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, the Pretoria Union of Jewish Women (UJW), and international disaster-relief agency CADENA recently came to the aid of indigent, dispossessed people in Marabastad outside of Pretoria, where civil unrest has destroyed the homes of more than 200 people, local and foreign. The appeal was made by local Democratic Alliance councillor Shaun Wilkinson.

    Call for tolerance of gender orientation

    In a talk titled, “The dignity of difference in relation to gender issues”, at the September WIZO (Women’s International Zionist Organisation) Forum, Carr said we should treat those with a gender orientation different to ourselves with dignity and compassion. Otherness doesn’t entitle us to be superior or behave in a demeaning way, he said, but sympathising with a person’s gender orientation doesn’t necessarily imply endorsement.
