Recyclers open Torah Academy’s eyes to community issues

Three neighbourhood recyclers recently joined Torah Academy Nursery School to share their life stories.

The talk was part of Hugo’s Greenhood, a project to uplift recyclers in the North-Eastern suburbs of Johannesburg, started by Hugo Paluch, a fourteen year old boy who lost his life in a tragic accident at Yeshiva College in Johannesburg last year.

Hugo had reached out to recyclers in the North-Eastern suburbs, collecting money for them to have a daily hot meal, and speaking to them individually.

He started Hugo’s Greenhood, with the vision of one day finding employment for every one of the recyclers. Since the tragedy that took his life, numerous inspiring initiatives have been carried out in his memory.

Hugo’s grandmother, Sharon, is spearheading Hugo’s Greenhood, which has continued to grow, creating a ripple effect of “seeing the unseen” – something Hugo spoke passionately about.

Torah Academy Nursery School is excited to get on board this community empowerment project, which helps its pupils look at their neighbourhood recyclers with a kind and grateful eye.
