Join an inspiring project, made with love!

SA Jewish Report and “67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day” have teamed up for a welfare project for Madiba. Stitch by stitch we will be keeping thousands of people warm around South Africa this winter in the name of our beloved Nelson Mandela. His legacy lives on each blanket we produce with our own two hands.

The SA Jewish Report has partnered with the initiative of 67
Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, an uplifting project started by Carolyn Steyn
of Auto and General. Her and our aim is to create thousands of hand-made
blankets which will be distributed to needy communities in South Africa.

Let’s get all SA Jewish community involved

The Jewish Report is challenging the broader Jewish
community to support this initiative. We are asking young and old, individuals,
businesses and schools to join 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, by knitting
or crocheting a blanket or squares for blankets which will then be collected
for delivery to various charities on July 18: Nelson Mandela Day.

How can the Jewish community get involved?

1. Start knitting a blanket, or squares, today

2. Challenge other Jewish businesses/retirement
homes/schools/individuals to compete with you by committing to making blankets

3. Should you not be able to join this inspiring project
yourself, you can also sponsor schools and old aged homes by supplying wool and
needles so they can get involved as well.

Blanket measurements are 150cm by 200cm – or 90cm by 110cm.

Parallel to this initiative we are also asking the Jewish
community to help keep the Jewish Report alive by donating money.

The initiative, which was launched in December 2013, has
made history by hosting a knit-a-thon on Robben Island and by bringing together
the leading ladies of South African theatre on one stage – for one night only.  Next up is a special Father’s Day blanket
handover at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal on June 15, and a not-to-be-missed blanket handover concert with the leading men of
South African theatre at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square on June 30.

Another exciting development is 67 Blankets for Nelson
Mandela Day’s partnership with Joint Aid Management (JAM), a South Africa-
based humanitarian aid organisation that was founded in 1984.

JAM currently provides for the needs of 49 000 children in
Early Childhood Development Centres in informal settlements and poverty-stricken areas around the country.  JAM
will be distributing the bulk of the blankets to these Early Childhood
Development Centres, many of which are housed in poorly insulated, corrugated
iron shacks, which get extremely cold in winter.

“We will also be donating blankets to a Diepsloot-based
charity organisation with Zelda la Grange and her Bikers for Mandela Day crew,”
says Steyn.
