Left, right & the safe spaces between them

Despite the confusing title, “Left, right and the safe spaces between them” and the subtitle: “I have never been a great fan of labels. Rolene Marks says that the propensity to label people according to what their perceived political persuasions or affinities are and pigeon-hole those into boxes labelled leftist or right-wingers “is slowly killing off constructive discourse”.

It is “with smug assuredness,” she writes in her new blog that people who propagate ideas of liberalism and pluralism, and “boast about ‘inclusion’ and ’safe spaces’ for those of diverse opinions,” this is turning campuses around the world away from being the bastions of free thought and expression that they were before.

Campuses, she feels, have become “hotbeds of incitement” and exclusion. Groups have been made pariahs and find themselves increasingly excluded from representation and discourse.
