Sive, who accompanied Bergman to the service, is a 91-year-old Second World War veteran.

The two of them represented the South African Jewish Ex-Service League at the service and they do their best to be at these events every year.

“Unfortunately our membership has shrunk over the years, but we try to attend as many memorial services as possible,” said Bergman, chairman of the League’s Johannesburg and Reef branch. “We want to show that Jews participated in various wars in which South Africa was involved.”

He explained that the Jewish Ex-Service League represented 187 ex-servicemen and women.
