Woolies rubbish rumours of going Gaza on Israel

SA Jewry almost platzed today after all the social media to-ing and fro-ing about Woolworths stopping to import Israeli products went completely viral. Things got so hot, in fact, that the SA Zionist Federation even issued two notices assuring the community that this was not the case.
Sure they have had demands from unions and the EFF to stop carrying Israeli goods, Woolworths’ Corporate Press Office admitted to SAJR.
“Less than 0.1 per cent of our food is sourced from Israel,” says Woolworths. That’s a far cry from the percentage of their business they do with SA Jewry, although that never factored into their decision. “Woolworths has no political affiliations,” they stated emphatically.
And, as a sign of good faith to the Jewish community, Woolies have posted the following statement on their corporate website:
‘Sourcing from Israel’
“We can confirm that we have not stopped stocking Israeli products in Woolworths stores.
“Woolworths has no political affiliations. We respect our customers’ right to make individual purchasing choices, which is why we clearly label every product’s country of origin and fully comply with government guidelines on product from Israel.
“Less than 0.1% of our food is sourced from Israel,” reads their notice.
Woolworths confirmed to Jewish Report that their customer support lines were inundated with calls from Jewish customers today – although they have no idea where the rumours started.
So rattled was SA Jewry by the concerns that the SA Zionist Federation issued two statements to their mailing lists and the media today reaffirming Woolworths’ position.
Letter to the editor
SAJR reader Joane Frank submitted the following letter today, Tuesday, which is representative of the numerous enquiries that SAJR received:
This morning my daughter reported to me that she heard the DJ on the Morning Mayhem show of ChaiFM state that Woolworths will no longer be stocking Israeli goods.
This naturally upset me and I called the Woolworths loyalty card department to ask them what their records reflect that I spend. I didn’t hear the name of the person who took my call, but he happily stated that my average spend is some R8 000 per year. This was then the amount, I informed him, that I will no longer be spending. I stated that I have been shopping at Woolworths for over thirty years and if it is indeed true that Woolworths will no longer stock Israeli goods then I will return my loyalty card and never set foot in the store again.
Now I may not have the conversation word perfect because I wasn’t taking notes, but the following was clear: the Woolworths man on the phone spoke with knowledge of the issue and responded that Israeli goods only make up about 1% of Woolworths stock and that Woolworths are considering the position. Considering the position?
Does this mean that Woolworths are just contemplating not stocking Israeli goods? And why? My daughter called the Woolworths Customer Service line to be told that the issue is “under review” which infers a decision was already taken or that they are indeed contemplating such a decision.
Following my inquiries to the Chevrah Kadisha, Tania at the Chev called me back to say she had spoken to a Woolworths “PR” at the head office who said this is all just a rumour.
Well was it?
As ChaiFM had broadcast the news I assumed this wasn’t just on rumour and requested their comment. Kathy Kaler responded that she spoke to the head of Woolworths marketing who put her on to the Woolworths Media liaison who confirmed that in fact Woolworths will no longer be stocking produce from Israel, and that they may overturn this when they see the reaction from the community but as it stands, there is no Israeli produce in the stores.
I’m still not shopping at Woolworths any more until I hear the company’s satisfactory stance on the matter, especially in view of the overt hostilities being expressed towards the Jewish community during this latest Israeli ordeal. Whether we hear it as crude threats or masterful public relations, we should take care to understand the underlying sentiment.
There are a growing number of distressing anecdotes about local commercial entities who are now refusing to sell or give services to Jews. Could the Jewish Report encourage members of the community to report these incidents for publication so that the safety implications could register on the communal scale? This would also help give the lie to the we’re-not-anti-Semitic-we’re-only-anti-Israel agenda.

I went to Woolworths this weekend, returned over R3000 worth of goods that I had receipts for, and closed my account with them. I was thrilled to see that despite it being the weekend just before Eid, there were not many Muslims in the store. We need to stand up for out fellow brothers and sisters that are dying every single day or what kind of Muslims and most importantly what kind of HUMANS will we be? South Africans wanted the world to support them for anti-apartheid, now we need to support those who are suffering, whichever country they may be in. IF this means boycotting companies and shops then so be it – we are a strong community and we can shop at any other store – woolworths is not indispensable! So what if your kid only wears woolworths – kids are dying every day and their concern is not what they wear, its staying alive! Lets remember that when we feel it hard to boycott. My family spends approximately R20 000 a month at Woolworths. Goodbye Woolworths!’

‘I have been a regular shopper at Woolworths for over 20 years.I am so disappointed with the response from Woolworths regarding continuing to import Israeli products & thereby funding the Israeli government that continues to kill hundreds of innocent CIViLiANS mainly children daily. I spend an average of R 35000 – 50000 @ Woolies annually & will no longer be supporting you.My extended family members of about 50 who spend about yhe same amount have all made this decision.This is not a religious issue between Muslims & Jews rather a humanitarian issue that has affected people all over the world.I suggest you follow in the footsteps of companies like Tescoes in the U K who have decided to no longer stock any Israeli goods’

I am regerring to Chaim and Duke and others who villify Hamas, the palestinians and others whom they have very little knowledge of. Bottom line is that Britain gave away a land that did not belong to them to a people who had no right to that land. Imagine ur property being given away without ur consent, how would you react. ‘Occupied territory? The UN gave the land to the Jews after the 2nd WW. At that time there were no peoples called Palestinians or they, too, would have been given land. In 1967 the Arab countries cowardly attacked Israel during their Day of Fast and within 6 days the Israelis had driven them all back having hard-won land. Gaza was full of abandoned tanks and soldiers boots! Hamas deliberately have their little enclaves within the civilian population of their OWN people and use THEIR OWN PEOPLE in the front lines in order to blame others falsely for attack civilians. When will the stupid world wake up to the lies and innuendoes of these awful people? Or are we all to be dammed!

Take your blinkers off. Tell us where the Palestinian boundaries were prior to Mr. Yassar Arrafat. What was the currency of your ‘claimed’ country. Name one or two of your leaders prior to Arrafat? Then recognise Hamas as a murderous terrorist group and boycott goods from all countries that support them. That should eliminate most if not all Muslim countries.
Next, throw out your computers, get rid of your cell phones, stop taking medices that were discovered by Jews or Israelis. Spend an hour or two in your house trying to identify goods which have an Israeli or Jewish origin. Dump the lot because you wont be happy having them. Once you have done that, sit back and enjoy the emptiness in your life. May it be a long one too.

‘90% if not more Jewish South African Citizens call on our government to encourage the parties in Israel/Gaza to work together towards building a sustainable peace in which a two state solution is completed with a viable Palestinian State existing side by side with the Jewish state as its neighbour. Most of the commentaries to the Woolworths Boycott call for the destruction of Israel as well as for its boycott.
Please continue to so but for starters please throw away your cell phone as the computer chip which enables it to operate was developed & manufactured in Israel. Please also do not use any new medical technology, drive a computerized car or fly in an Aeroplane.
As for Genocide in Gaza. Are you serious? The following deaths & injuries have been caused by Muslims mainly on Muslims viz. Assad butchered 170 000 Muslims, displaced 3 million Syrians & left hundreds of Thousands injured. ISIS in its short televised existence has murdered 5 500 people & injured 11 000 plus killed Tens of Thousands of Christians for refusing to
convert to Islam. (Talk about ethnic Cleansing) Boko Haram attacks have left 12 000 dead & 8 000 injured. 600 000 people were killed by Muslims in Darfur. Since the Arab Spring over 300 000 Muslims have been killed by Muslims & millions have been displaced. Yet you are all silent on the above. What a bunch of hypocrites.

‘Pathetic boycotting Woolies. The only benefit of doing so is to raise the profile of the grandstanders at the expense of a company who really couldn’t care less about political views. This grandstanding does not raise the profile of Palestine – that’s a third-hand issue in this particular debate. Why would anyone support someone who puts Palestine third or fourth on their list of priorities? 0.1% of goods? Please.
Sheep: think for yourselves and support a genuine cause (read: go bleat somewhere else about something more relevant – I’m sure there are far more direct means of supporting Palestine if you so choose).
