Young and old gather at Sandton Sinai to celebrate the joy of reading

On Friday, April 13, residents from Our Parents’ Home were invited by Sandton Sinai school to come and read to the children. This was part of a pre-launch gathering to celebrate the arrival of the PJ Library, a global reading programme, in South Africa. A fun morning was enjoyed by old and young alike.

Monday, April 16, the school launched the initiative, which enables youngsters and their parents to explore their Jewish identity and values through storytelling.

PJ Library was established in memory of the late Daniella Moffson and is being launched in all Jewish day schools.

On Monday, each Sandton Sinai pupil in Grade R, Grade 1 and Grade 2 came to school in their pyjamas and received a book bag and a book. Parents and grandparents then joined the children and read them the book they had been given.

As part of the initiative, each child will get a book to take home to keep once a month. Each book deals with a different value or theme, creating opportunities for little ones and their parents to explore their Jewish identity in a joyful, relevant way.
