Board chair Feldman hands over reins

“The South African Jewish Report is a treasure. It’s one of the jewels of our community and nothing gave me greater pleasure, as chairman of the Board, to have had the honour of keeping it safe for four years.”

It was not always easy to do so. The paper represents all elements of the Jewish community, from observant to non-observant, from “left” to “right”, from young to old and is also read by those who might not be part of our community but have an interest in the news stories and our community.

It is read by South Africans abroad and needs to reflect real and relevant news. Our readers are opinionated and informed and they rightfully demand a high standard.

Four years ago the paper was under extreme financial strain.

Through the hard work of the fulltime staff, the dedicated editor, initially Geoff Sifrin and more recently Vanesa Valkin, through the dedication of the paper’s financial manager Karen Knowles and through the almost obsessive passion from the Board, the paper today is financially comfortable and secure and viable.

RIGHT: New Jewish Report chairman Howard Sackstein

As a community paper we are reliant and dependent on the community and I continue to ask our readers to keep us in mind for advertising, donations and support.

But for me it is time to hand over the responsibility. Howard Sackstein, a committed and dedicated member of the Board and chairman of the fantastic Jewish Achievers event,

has kindly agreed to take the baton from me and I am deeply grateful to him for having agreed to do so. It is an awesome position and I am certain that he will take the paper to the next level.

I owe immense gratitude to our Board – Bertie Lubner, Herby Rosenberg, Benjy Porter and outgoing Board, particularly Issie Kirsh and Marlene Bethlehem who have been with the paper almost since its inception. On a professional and personal level, I have much to be thankful for.

I have no intention of parting ways with the paper and will be remaining on the Board specifically involved in the editorial. I am excited to be able to work closely with Vanessa and Ant Katz in this area and continue to guide the paper in this arena.

It remains for me to gingerly but confidently hand the precious jewel to Howard Sackstein and wish him success in this fantastic position.

G-d bless,

‘Is this the same Howard Sackstein who so desperately wishes S.Africa to be the facilitator in making peace between Israel and the Arab terrorists?

\”well done\” to the Board of S.A. Jewish Report.

You could never have chosen a worse person.’

‘This is a travesty. Feldman was an icon, a legend – easily the finest chairman in SAJR history, if not global business…

I had the pleasure of meeting Howard when
\nhe visited the UK in 2005. He seemed
\nalmost a little shy for someone I later found out was an industrial tycoon. I’ve followed his career since our meeting. Every now and then I’d see his name in
\nthe Times. But it’s his budding writing career that I’m most interested in. My dear Howard – you may have made your name as a commodity trader but let there
\nbe no doubt, you are a born wordsman.’

‘This really is sad news – Howard was a gifted Chairman – and an amazing ambassador for South African Jewry – he epitomised menshlikeit and modesty when he hosted us last year.

We had the absolute pleasure of staying at Howard at his incredible house during our time whilst performing at the Sinai indaba last year. It was first experience visiting SA ever, and Howard ensured we were looked after in his incredible house – he even introduced to biltong!

Really Howard, we hope the SAJR is able to perform in your absence as Chairman, and much hatzlacha in your new career as a blogger!

‘Howard Feldman’s departure will leave a chasm.  Besides his sterling work in establishing the SAJR as a truly world-class paper, he has of late been an invaluable ally of the SAZF in stemming the tide of anti-Israel sentiment and addressing the pertinent issues head-on with both remarkable clarity and scintillating wit.

He will be missed.  Of that there can be no doubt. Though in Howard Sackstein’s capable hands, I’ve no doubt this fine newspaper – possibly the finest in the Jewish world – will only go from strength to strength.

    SIncerely

    A Krengel’

    ‘Dear Mr Feldman

I have really enjoyed the resurgence of the SAJR under your chairmanship.

Hopefully, I will get the opportunity to read your columns in the near future.

    Regards

    Ethel Cohen (Emmerentia)’
