How strong are Superbowl 2015’s Jewish roots

Just how strong, however, is a matter of conjecture that has engrossed the US Jewish media ahead of today’s game.

Some is known, other not – and still more falls into the ‘iffy’ category.

Anyone who knows anything about US sport knows that probably the most successful quarterback in National Football League (NFL) history, Tom Brady, will be competing in his record-breaking sixth (and probably final) Super Bowl this evening – and stands a chance of making it a record-breaking four wins as well!

Restricting all of the the US Jewish media’s wild speculation over the Jewishness of the event, which really isn’t of much import anyway – they just don’t have anything else to write about – let’s iust look at what the Jewish media has been saying about Brady, and his links and history regarding Judaism over the past week:

BRADY WORKS FOR A JEWISH TEAM-OWNER:
The owner of the Patriots, the only team Brady has played for in his 15 years in the NFL, is Robert Kraft, a Jewish business magnate and philanthropist who also owns the New England Revolution soccer team.

PRO BASEBALL PLAYER AND BROTHER-IN-LAW IS JEWISH: Gabe Friedman, writing on JTA on Friday, said that since 2012,Brady’s brother-in-law has been Kevin Youkilis, the former all-star third baseman for the Boston Red Sox who’s now retired from baseball.

TOM BRADY HAS A MENORAH AT HIS HOME: “Who can explain why Brady has a menorah?” asked Mark Leibovich in a New York Times profile published on Monday. Leibivich writes that he noticed the Jewish candelabra standing in Brady’s house: “He marched me back into the house, through the kitchen and past a shelf that displayed a large glass menorah. ‘We’re not Jewish,’ Brady said when I asked him about this. ‘But I think we’re into everything. … I don’t know what I believe. I think there’s a belief system, I’m just not sure what it is,’.”

Surely it is time for the US Jewish media to get over trying to prove the impossible. Brady was raised Catholic, and his wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen, is a sixth-generation non-Jewish Brazilian.

Maybe he was inspired by Cameron Diaz’s decision to have a Jewish wedding? Or perhaps he is hoping a menorah will bring him some old-fashioned mazel for the big game today?

Your guess is as good as ours. .
